How to start in NS-3 platform in order to design a MAC protocol in underwater sensor network ?

Dear
i am newbie in NS-3. i would like to design a MAC protocol in underwater sensor network. How should i have to start or
what are the prerequisite that should maintain in designing a MAC in NS-3 platform ?
please suggest me also let me know about aqua-sim.
