Changes in Apllication layer and Node parameters

I am working on a project to add an encryption layer in MQTT-SN protocol and judging the performances of different encryption schemes. 

MQTT-SN is Publish-Subscribe based Application layer protocol similar to MQTT but uses UDP (along with some other differences).

Since MQTT-SN is not available in ns3, I decided to use a simple star topology where the broker node would be connected to every other node and it will act as an UDPecho server and whereas other nodes as UDPecho clients.

To simulate my encryption model, I have to modify the application layer to add an encryption layer in it. Since I am new to this simulator, Can somebody tell me if its possible or not?

Also, I have to judge the performance of the system, therefore I would have to set some parameters for nodes, such as Main Memory, MIPS, etc. Would I be able to achieve this using ns3?

If yes, please provide some help mildly explaining the 'how' part.
