HI all,

Today is the first chance I have to get up to Mountain Lake. The webcam looks good, but does anyone know if it's too crunchy/icy, etc.?

I plan on heading up with my dog around 2 pm. My timing is always unreliable these days because of my two little kids, but if anyone would like to try to meet us up there, I am open to it!

Thanks!
Katie

I don't know the conditions today.  Yesterday it was crunchy. You can also call the Mountain Lake Hotel for general snow conditions.

Would love to hear how conditions are for you today.

Hi My husband Pete Schmitthenner is up there now but he is coming home by 1. He is skiing the back road from the research station out about 3-4 miles. Apparently (from 2 days ago) the side of the road is the only skiable area now. All the normal trails are not suitable as of 2 days ago.
Have fun and be safe!

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised. I parked at Treetop Adventures and went out and back both on the Turnpike and whatever Jungle trail runs parallel to it. Both were skiable and had been hit up by many skiers before me. The nuisances were the sticks that have fallen in the past week, but I hopped them just fine. With the weather staying chilly, I bet it will remain skiable for a few more days.

Cheers!
Katie

Yesterday (Sunday)  I skied from the UVa Biological Station all the way to Wind Rock, following the side of Mountain Lake Road (613) about 8 miles round trip.  The skiing was fast and great!  Only on the way back did I have to take my skis off a couple of times and walk on the road because of steep downhills.  Otherwise, the grade is quite gentle.  Probably the snow will stay put for a couple more days.  There’s a small parking place on the right side of the road just up the unplowed road, or if you don’t have 4WD you should be able to park on the side of the plowed portion of the road where the unplowed portion beings.  A highly recommended route!  Pete

Thanks Peter!

We went today about 11am- 3pm . It was pretty icy but manageable for an experienced skier.

I skied through the Biological Station. Didn' realize how large the campus was. Reminded me of the compound from that series LOST.

We also skied at TreeTop adventures. similar conditions.
