Mica Paluzzi and I spent four hours in the park today. It was relatively quiet, a scarcity of woodpeckers and nuthatches duly noted. But, the raven action was full tilt, and the famous nesting spot on the rock cliff across the river had one raven on it, and two others flying about. Occasionally the one setting, would join the others, but soon return. For two years now I have not seen any activity at this site, so this was most encouraging.
Mica found the brown creeper, and the ring-necked duck was a lifer for him. We took some time out for him to complete his bird-watching merit badge material, which he brought along. The warmth, and a few singing song sparrows lent a hint of spring to the air, but the winter landscape reminded us that we will just have to wait.
Walking in the woods and fields during winter has its own charm, and certainly the advantage of less woody weeds to negotiate. Several times we strayed off the paths, thus seeing this wonderful place from new perspectives.
