This afternoon, when the temperature was in the low 70s I went to the I C DeHart park in Woolwine to listen for wood frogs. I was not disappointed-they were clacking loudly and when I got to the little pool, I saw many disappear into the water and also saw that they had been very busy laying eggs. Many egg masses in this very small pool. Appalachian Power cut many of the nearby trees to open up the power lines so the pool is in direct sun now and is smaller than usual. Not sure there will be enough water long enough for the tadpoles to become adults. I was happy to hear them so early but worried about the long term prognosis for them.

Carol,
Thanks for posting your observations. Is anyone participating in the
vernal pool monitoring with Virginia Master Naturalists at that spot?

We went out for Great Horned Owls on private land in Blacksburg tonight
(6-7:30), and while we did not find owls, we did see lots of wood frogs
and an egg mass in a small pool that lay across the (dirt) access road
in the woods. They were also loud at that pool.

I also checked out a vernal pool area yesterday. I heard wood frogs and peepers. Unfortunately, the owner of this property has bulldozed the area and put in culverts last month, so very little standing water left this year. Like Carol, I see little hope for success in this area in the future.

I don't know if there are any Virginia Master Naturalists checking that pool. I've never seen anyone else there and I've been checking it every spring for several years, taking my grandsons to check for eggs and tadpoles. If we get regular rain, maybe these pools will survive. We can hope.

Saw and heard wood frogs along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Floyd last week, though I did not see any egg masses-- yet.
