The Way Foreward

Hi,

Please forward to your database and or club members.

WOMZA has gone through the 2012 season administering various facets of 2-wheels and motorsport in general.  Notwithstanding the fact that we were in court in November 2011 and again with an appeal hearing in February 2012.  For an administrative organisation to have spent over R400 000 in court costs, this was most certainly a trying time for a relatively young administrative organisation.  We did not anticipate the level of support from you the competitor and hence had to spend excessive amounts on upgrading from manual administrative processes to website upgrades, hardware and software upgrades, online licensing and registration.  For a total staff compliment of four individuals this was no mean feat. There were certain logistic problems and grey areas within rules and regulations, which also added to our frustrations in 2012.

The chairman of WOMZA Mr Tim Stephens started WOMZA in 2006 using some very basic principles, which we have listed below:

  • Every sportsman within our country deserves the right to freedom of choice and this is reinforced by the South African Constitution.
  • WOMZA further believes that the sole source of finance cannot come from the competitor and or sponsor in the drive to cover huge administrative costs and that from a basic social rider or club participant up to a National / International competitors, should be given every opportunity to be able to participate within the sport of his choice at the most affordable rates.
  • WOMZA believes that sport in South Africa can only develop naturally with sponsor, media, electronic media, magazines and advertising of their sport without using this as a source of funding to an administrative body.  If assistance is offered by a potential sponsor to improve the administration and logistics of a specific sport, this would obviously be welcomed.  We however do not believe that sponsors should be charged by an administrative body to film, promote and advertise the sport, when in actual fact the competitors are putting on the show for the spectators, TV audiences and electronic media recipients.
  • WOMZA does not believe in offering people positions of power within our organisation as it may be seen as a barter system in return for support by those who carry influence and in certain instances have financial and or business agendas at heart.  We believe that the system of committees works very well in the guidance and running of the different facets and that these committees are monitored with the basic principle of making recommendations to the participants based on of what is in the best interest of the sport.  Most of the current committee members currently serving are successful business men in their personal capacities and therefore are unlikely to make decisions on behalf of our sport, which would not be financially beneficial to our sport.
  • WOMZA believes that the license holders / participants have a right to decide on the future of their sport.  We further believe that the sponsors who have a financial investment in their sport also have a say as to how the sport should be promoted.  WOMZA does not have a structure within our Articles of Association for the banning or sanctioning of participants who speak out against the administration and therefore every participant / license holder has the right to send any relevant comments to WOMZA for review by the various committees, who are there to guide that particular facet of sport.  WOMZA will not unduly prejudice any rider, who wants to hold an alternative license and participate in an alternative series or who wishes to participate in International events, our members are afforded freedom of choice.
  • We do under our rules and regulations, which in essence needs to be approved by the licensed holders whereby participants who behave in a distasteful manor toward their fellow participants and or officials, can be sanctioned by officials at an event or hearing.
  • WOMZA further believes that by keeping permit fees to a minimum would allow promoters and circuit owners alike to increase their profitability and hopefully offer their clients improved venues at reasonable entry fees.
  • WOMZA has established a promotion and marketing company, and as the name indicates it is there to promote and encourage sponsorship into all facets of motorsport, namely Your World Of Motorsport SA.

The following are certain aspects of our success over the years since our inception:

  • 1st Affiliations started in March 2006.
  • WOMZA had 6 clubs affiliated and 400 members in 2006.
  • In 2011 membership increased over the years growing to 24 clubs and 2 500 competitors.
  • In 2012 participants and licensed holders over doubled, clubs increased to 46 affiliated circuits with approximately 250 officials and marshals backing our structure.
  • Currently there are no less than 11 different facets being administered by WOMZA, ranging from cars to bikes, however the two basic facets cars and bikes are administered separately as the understanding of motorcycle racing and motor vehicle is inherently different and once again is further divided by circuit and non-circuit categories.
  • WOMZA further believes that their biggest assets are its competitors, promoters and officials, who are affiliated to our company and they have in essence proved the need for an alternative administrative body within South Africa.
  • Keeping the cost of motorsport to an affordable level, will intern bring a higher growth rate into motorsport.
  • Offering the promoters of venues public liability insurance and participant’s personal accident or medical insurance.
  • WOMZA has declared numerous National, Regional and Club champions in over 11 different facets of motorsport and would like to congratulate all our 2012 champions.

WOMZA as an administrative body clearly understands that in the November of 2011 similar circumstances prevailed between us and the existing governing body, which no doubt has once again created uncertainty amongst the participants and therefore we urge you not to be misled by various communications and that the basic rules of the Constitution and freedom of choice will inevitably safeguard you in your future decisions.

We would hereby remind you that all licenses that were taken out in 2012 are effective until the 31st of January 2013.  2013 licenses will open on Monday the 26th November 2012.  Online profiles, licenses and medical aid are available and you can find a step by step process on the website.  Please note that booking of competitors bike numbers are on a 1st come 1st serve basis and will only be issued after completion of license.

I would like to thank all participants, circuits, sponsors and officials for their input in 2012 we wish you an enjoyable Festive Season and look forward to your support in 2013.

Regards,
