Research project outline

An exciting new industry funded PhD position is available on the topic of land management and insect biodiversity in western NSW.

Details can be found here: https://federation.edu.au/research/graduate-research-school/hdr-scholarships/industry-and-project-specific-scholarships

Interested applicants can contact Dr Philip Barton for more information (ps.b...@federation.edu.au)

Project title: Effects of land management on insect biodiversity and ecosystem services in semi-arid NSW.

An exciting new project is available to examine the benefits of land conservation techniques for insect biodiversity and associated ecosystem services in semi-arid western NSW. Changes to land management can lead to the regeneration of vegetation, but flow-on effects to insect biodiversity are not well-understood. This project will investigate insect biodiversity and ecosystems services among areas of vegetation with contrasting land management histories of livestock grazing and fire. There is scope to work with academic researchers, industry practitioners (NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust), and landowners. The applicant must be prepared to undertake entomological lab work and remote area field work.

Industry Partner and Student Host: This project is in partnership with NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (https://www.bct.nsw.gov.au/). Co-supervision of the project will be provided by Dr Geoffrey Kay, Principal Ecologist at BCT, with opportunities to work closely with a range of University academics and BCT field officers.
