I see from the links that the SDS bits can be used in a hand punch. I
think
we should try using the spiral drill bits available in India by mounting
them in the hand punch. May be punching a hole will be easier with these
bits.

Hey Benji ,
This drill bit does look like the one we use with the drill machine but
infact it can be used with a hand drill too.. If you see any hand
drill Pika
, petzl etc they suggest these bits...
See the image at:
http://www.petzl.com/petzl/SportProduits?MotRecherche=Quick+Search&pays=0&Langue=en&Activite=0&Famille=14&SousFamille=75&Produit=371&Conseil=&ProduitAssocie=

It shows the petzl rocpec drill with the same carbide tipped drill bit .
Also if you see the fixe drill bit on the fixe site they use the same
bits.

This was just to clarify things.... but yes u re right.. no point in
geting
too many drill bits each costing 300 rs... and people say that these 10 $
ones are cheap and do not last long and suggest to use the Hilti ones
which
are available for 40 $ ...

Anyways , I will keep looking around for more info about this ,

Bye

Hey Benji,
Thats right, and as I said in my previous mail ,thats what even John
Long suggests in the book 'big wall climbing'.

But the normal spiral drills are straight shank . (the RAWL are
tapered)... so the suggestion given in the book was to grind the ends
that would fit into the punch , so as to make a slight taper ,,, now
they should easily fit into the punch.

But the drills could very easily break if the material is not right.
We need a 'high speed steel' or 'cobalt steel ' drill...
Anyways when I am back I will try doing all this. Or maybe if you can
somehow buy some drill bits and fit them into the punch , just try it
on the rock and see how it behaves.

I will scan the page from the book which shows the diagrams of the
rawl punch... the same one we use... just that the drill bit is spiral
and not like the ones we use.

So thats it,
Bye
