Synopsis of
NPR Weekend Edition puzzle
with Lulu Garcia-Navarro and Will Shortz
2020-08-23
The listener challenge for this week is to think of a major city in
France whose name is an anagram of a major city in Italy. Each
city has more than 100,000 people. The answers are Orléans and
Salerno.
Lulu reported over 1,300 entries.
The on-air player is Ben Bernard of Cliff Island, Maine. His
solution came from a family effort, including his wife, Victoria, his
daughter Ellen and his son Julian (phonetic). Someone thought of
Salerno first.
Today’s on-air puzzle is called, “Low And Inside.” Every answer is
a word or name that has the syllable "low" (phonetic) somewhere
inside it (not at the start or the end). The "low" syllable is always
accented. For example, if the clue is, “Like the U.S. before 1776,”
the answer could be COLONIAL.
CLUES:
1. Greeting in Hawaii
2. House speaker Nancy
3. Tennis star Martina
4. Spanish city that hosted the 1992 Olympics
5. Powerful land in ancient Mesopotamia
6. Everyday sandwich meat
7. Sounding pleasant to the ear, as music
8. Informal, as speech
9. Religious scholar
10. Kind of tube that a fertilized egg passes through
11. Relating to or involved in crime
12. Running away to get married
Answers are near the end of this synopsis.
This week's challenge comes from listener Sandy Weisz, of
Chicago. Think of a place on earth with a four-word name. Take
the third word. Advance three of its letters to the next letter of the
alphabet (so A would become B, B would be come C, etc.). You'll
get the fourth word in the name. What place is this?
Answers must be received by 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time on
THURSDAY. NPR will no longer receive entries by email. Be
sure to include a telephone number where you can be reached if
you are selected as the winner.
Entries may be submitted at the NPR web page:

No mail this week, in part because Joe did not make the errors
last week that I made two weeks ago. Thank you, Ben, for your
keen eye. At least this week I ran a spell checker.
Hints:
4. Spanish city that hosted the 1992 Olympics: second largest city
in Spain
5. Powerful land in ancient Mesopotamia: starts with a B; where
modern Iraq is
