As I joined the group and reviewed the NPEC google site, something I thought might be helpful is clarifying this question: "What is a nurse policy entrepreneur?"
I think this term could mean different things to different people. Is it being your own start-up in business, or is it something more philosophical?

For people new to this concept or idea, it may be helpful to clarify. What does being a nurse policy entrepreneur mean to others?

Thank you for creating this platform and space! Very excited to be here.

Jason

Jason,
I am in agreement that a framework to define Nurse Policy Entrepreneurs (NPEs) would be helpful. As a new member here also, I originally joined because the three monikers of being a nurse who loves the climate of entreprenuership and change is the heart of each of those words. Thus, to clarify NPE, I haven't given it much thought outside of presumptions.

A quick AI search for curiousity defines NPEs in the following way which may be a general start to synthesize characteristics. Thoughts:
"A nurse policy entrepreneur (NPE) is a healthcare professional who combines nursing expertise with policy-making skills to drive healthcare reform and address unmet needs in the healthcare system[4][7]. Like a business entrepreneur, an NPE has the vision to identify gaps in healthcare policy and uses various tools, including disrupting the status quo, to effect change[4].

## Key Characteristics of Nurse Policy Entrepreneurs

1. Vision: NPEs can identify and define healthcare issues that require policy intervention[7].
2. Political acumen: They understand the political climate and can navigate it effectively[7].
3. Leadership: NPEs provide leadership in addressing healthcare issues through policy changes[7].
4. Team building: They have the ability to build and lead teams to support their policy initiatives[7].
5. Disruption: NPEs are willing to challenge existing norms and practices to bring about necessary changes[4].

Nurse policy entrepreneurs play a crucial role in shaping healthcare policies, improving patient care, and advancing the nursing profession. They leverage their clinical experience and healthcare knowledge to influence decision-making processes and advocate for positive changes in the healthcare system.

This is one of those 'duh' moments that gets overlooked when you're so entrenched in developing something. We've got a lot of information describing an NPE in our blogs and publications, and definitely a lot of content on how to develop as an NPE - but an infographic or one-pager on what an NPE is doesn't come across explicitly. The beauty of having fresh eyes and perspectives is to help build this out.

Thanks for starting the conversation and adding initial thoughts. What would the best way to visualize this be?

Some initial thoughts for consideration:
  • A clear definition of NPE would help both attract and retain new members who align with NPEC's vision
  • Having this foundational piece could spark valuable discussions about how the role of NPEs is evolving
  • A concise visual representation could be powerful for presentations and sharing on social media
  • Identify the genesis of this term. Has this been used in research?
For NPEC Leadership:
  • Facilitate a collaborative definition-building process involving current members
  • Document the historical context of the term's adoption
  • Create clear objectives for how the concept should evolve
For Definition Development:
  • Host focused discussion sessions with members
  • Gather perspectives from both experienced and new members
  • Consider creating a working group to refine the definition
  • Seek input from policy experts and nursing leaders
An Infographic:
  • Provides a clear, concise definition
  • Highlights the three core components (clinical expertise, policy knowledge, and innovation)
  • Outlines key activities
  • Maintains a professional healthcare aesthetic
  • Can be easily adapted for different formats
Review Process Recommendations:
For peer review of the infographic, consider including:
  • Experienced nurse policy entrepreneurs
  • New NPEC members (for clarity and accessibility)
  • Healthcare policy experts
  • Nursing education professionals
  • Communication/design experts for visual effectiveness

Hope this is helpful.

Jason,
Your narrations are very helpful to denote inclusive work for the NPE topic. The visual is illustrative of the core concepts. I am new here so forgive me if everyone is completely aware, but I did just come across Michael's SIGMA presentation on explaining all of this fully as he intended the NPE startup.
If you haven't already, check it out: https://youtu.be/2HobzEq7ipw?si=Nf7nP2MDGzX70wyA

I love the video's emphasis on our intentionality for professional identity and self-reflecting on our hot button passion points as an NPE. The internal understanding of our self motivated nature as entrepreneurs will lead this area of the profession to further clarify, adopt, and help change the way nurses lead.
One area of NPE that sparks my interest often in reformation is the technology driven changes (telehealth, AI, mobile) etc. Taking action as nurse diplomats to have desire to drive change and get the most done is central to "bloom where we are planted first"! Of course global replication is important, but I do feel like the people who recognize us first clinical and then networking conversations toward decisions-makers at various levels is vital.
Where would you like to start in your self identity as an NPE and why?
Let's brainstorm!

Nikol
