We're discussing turf management ideas with Parks and Rec now that we
are getting so much more use (and even more if we get the lights
in!). Any ideas?

What is currently being put down at Nate's Point? My dogs get home from
there licking and biting their paws. They must be allergic to
something... maybe the grass. However, it would be nice to know what
they are putting on it. Fish Emulsion maybe?

To answer the question of what to do let's examine some realities:

1.  We are in the midst of a looming water crisis and need to do all we can to conserve water.  More plantings will not help.
2.  We are also in the midst of a city budget crisis.  More plantings require more attention and only adds to the costs of keeping this city running.
3.  Grass and ground cover plantings are not good choices for playgrounds for our children and are not good choices areas where our beloved dogs.
Such plantings will only succumb to pet urine, excessive traffic & trampling.

As much as we all prefer green grass and ground covers, we need to do the responsible thing and at least investigate the possible us of an unlimitted supply of mulch from the parks department as a possible solution for the play areas and reserve expensive and water thirsty live plantings for we humans to enjoy.

While grass and live plants are my preferred choice, the realities cannot be ignored.  Sacrifices and compromises must be explored to come up with more reasonable alternatives solutions.

Thanks for putting on your thinking caps.

Regarding non-grass options, any suggestions? Has anybody ever seen a
dog park work successfully with the fake plastic grass? Particularly
from an odor standpoint, which may then still require water?

Dog Beach Dog Wash (in Ocean Beach) installed the 'fake grass' last year. It
has certainly been 'battle tested' at their place of business. They would be
in a good position to answer any questions about it. You can speak with
either Jane or Mindy at the Dog Beach Dog Wash on Voltaire Street in OB.

Dogs eat and can choke on the plastic grass. Love the mulch idea!

Marian,
If you could pass this on it would be great as I keep getting kick back.

Before you think about mulch go to the Dog park in La Mesa , I think it is
behind Grossmont High School. It is one big Dirt Bowl. I live in East County
and I go to Balboa because it is much nicer and Cleaner for my dogs.

Fake Grass is great, expensive but great, I personaly have it in my back
yard.

I have had it fro over a year, and I have two large dogs.

As an emloyee at the SD Humane Society where we have had the Fake Turf in use for almost 5 years now I could pass along alot of information about it to anyone interested to benefit the dog park. One thing that alot of people don't realize is how hot it can get during the Hot summer months. It needs to be shaded or can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees just like asphalt. We installed giant Shade covers over ours to keep it cooler during the summer months.
