The absurd Lorentz transform
John-Erik Persson
In 1887 Lorenz stated, regarding Michelson’s interferometer, that in the arm transverse to the ether wind light must take a longer way due to the ether wind. Therefore, he also said that there is an effect of the ether wind also in the reference arm, and this effect is half the effect in the measuring arm. According to Michelson this effect in the reference arm does not exist. So, Michelson protested in vain, since most scientists supported Lorenz. This schism had the effect that Michelson had a nervous break-down.
Michelson’s reaction is understandable, since Lorenz was wrong, and the truth is that moving the detector cannot change the behavior of light. So, light takes the same way as before, and the only effect is that light hits another point on the detector. This change of position is falling inside the wave front and is therefore irrelevant. So, Lorenz mistake was devastating and we got the absurd Lorenz transform.
In 1905 Einstein accepted the absurd Lorenz transform, but invented another absurdity for motivating the theory. Einstein postulated that light can move with the same velocity in relation to all not accelerated observer motions. This theory is called the special theory of relativity. A remarkable property of this theory is that dilation of time is included. This means that two points in different positions can have different times. So, Newton’s concept with absolute time is conflicted.
So, Lorenz and colleagues (except Michelson) made a devastating mistake in 1887 by not understanding the wave model. The mistake regarding the reference arm in Michelson’s interferometer has been devastating to physics and Einstein’s modification of Lorenz’ theory has just made the error even more difficult to see.
We should have listened to Michelson.
