From Monday 19th July 2021, visitors will get to discover more about real Viking heroes, including; the legendary Eric Bloodaxe; ruthless adventurer Harald Hardrada; warrior woman Lathgertha; brave explorer Leif the Lucky; fearsome warrior Sweyn Forkbeard; and the great leader, King Harald Bluetooth of Denmark - among others - as they uncover what makes a true Viking hero.
The name Valhalla comes from the Norse Valholl, with holl originally referring to a rock, rocks, or mountains, not a hall, and understood as Rock of the Slain. In this earlier vision, the Valkyries were understood as death demons who carried the souls of fallen warriors to a kind of eternal battlefield strewn with stones or one below a range of mountains. It is unclear when Valholl changed to the familiar Valhalla, a hall of heroes and kings served by Valkyries, but this image was established by the 10th century in the poem Grímnismál.
Norse mythology, legend, and history were passed down orally for generations until the arrival and acceptance of Christianity c. 1000. The runic alphabet of Scandinavian countries was used only for memorial stones or conveying brief messages; runes were not meant for long texts. The tales of the gods and heroes that make up Norse mythology were memorized by the poets (skalds), who sang them for audiences and taught them to protégés who would sing them for the next generation.
Although the heroes are killed a second time, they go down fighting bravely for the cause of order and are ultimately victorious, even in defeat, as the gods triumph over chaos and a new world rises from the destruction of the old. It has been claimed by some scholars, however, that this vision of the end of the world and rebirth is a Christian contribution to an older mythic cycle that ended with the death of the gods and the destruction of the Nine Realms, lacking the hope of resurrection. Davidson, for example, notes how early references to Valhalla indicate it was no more than another term for the land of the dead:
A.D. 436, This is the time of the legendary Sigurd the dragon slayer. Son of hero Sigmund and leading figure in the Volsung saga. Also known as Siegfried.
480, King Hadding of Denmark. Raised by giants he fought many a great battle. His tale is filled with fantastic creatures and magic.
520, Beowulf. Perhaps the most well known of the Viking heroes. Known mostly for killing the wicked Grendel.
In terms of team composition, it is important to let your team know of yourintentions to select TLV before they decide on their heroes. TLV generallyworks best with a more "traditional" team composition, consisting of a maintank, healer, and at least one sustained damage dealing assassin. The idea isto select heroes who have good sustain, or the ability to maintain team fightsover objectives for longer durations. This involves selecting healers who havea steady uptime of heals or damage mitigation such as Malfurion. We do not recommend getting squishy melee assassins with Vikings, since they willhave a hard time killing enemies team fights with your allies being down aplayer, because TLV will most often be split-pushing lanes and soaking experienceto gain a team level advantage. Due to the disadvantage in player number foryour team during some objective based team fights, it may also be a good ideato include a long range caster who can poke the enemy away from capturingspecific objectives, such as altars on Towers of Doom or Tributes on CursedHollow. This stalling and sustaining of team fights by your allies distractsthe enemy and allows TLV to be even more effective in locking down the rest ofthe battleground. It is very important that your team is aware of when you willand will not be available to group for objectives as it will allow them to makea wiser decision as to when to engage or simply tradethe objective for some other advantage.
Unlike in other modules, disgruntled heroes with which you have insufficient relation may choose to strike it on their own as adventurers. Once they become adventures, they will never be able to join player's party again, becoming mercenaries and eventually lords.
Hatchet and Dagger - The hatchet has long been a Viking weapon but pairing it with a speedy dagger makes the Shaman extremely unpredictable and savage. The smallest pair of weapons among the vikings, the Shaman can crack skulls and gouge the innards of her foe with these weapons.
