Dear Women’s Officers and Activists,
In this email:
-UWA
-Safe Events Respectful Clubs and Societies
-Blue Stockings
-Talk About It Consultation
Hello! I hope that SWOTVAC is treating you well. I know this is a really stressful period of time for everyone and can mean that you’re doing a lot of caring for other people at the same time as you’re pretty stressed yourself. Make sure you’re looking after yourself as well!
It’s been a busy time since we last communicated. I was lucky enough to spend some time with women’s collectives from around the country when I did some campus visits. I’ve now communicated with most, if not all, active women’s officers and I’ve been able to meet a lot of you too.
We have seen the treatment of women university students taking precedence in the media. In particular the front page story on the Sunday West Australian exposed the appalling treatment of women at Guild O-Camps. Out of the focus on UWA has come a really fantastic collection of women from the Feminist Action Network. Their hard work is really impressive and they’re working with the Guild and the University to ensure that there are changes made to culture and practice.
Out of events like those at UWA, as well as others that have not been publicized, the department is in the process of developing a resource for women’s departments and student organisations on how to run events and have clubs and societies that are respectful toward women. The resource will be launched at NOWSA in July and there’ll be more info available in the next few weeks about that.
Bluestockings dates have been announced! They are the 6th-10th of August on the east coast and the 13th- 17th of August on the West Coast. The NUS Women’s Department is proud to be putting on Bluestockings with the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Women’s Committee. More on that in the next email too!
Talk About It will be launched for the second time on the 17th of August in Perth. Next week the department will be running consultation sessions around changes which are going to be made to the survey. I know it’s crappy SWOTVAC timing and I’m really sorry. But the time line is pretty tight and the only way that we’re going to be able to consult everyone that we need to is if we start soon. There will be 4 sessions, two of which will be on Skype and two of which will be done with NUS’s Teleconference package.
The dates will be:
Monday the 4th of June at 7pm Skype
Tuesday the 5th of June at 12 pm (midday) Teleconference
Wednesday the 6th of June 4pm Teleconference
Thursday the 7th of June 9am Skype
Details for how to call in or Skype in will be sent out on Friday
If you want to come along and be a part of the consultation please do. I’ve attached a set of consultation questions and the original questions from last year. Please register for the session you want to attend
here
As always contact me if you have any questions or concerns, I hope to speak to many of you next week,
In Sisterhood,
Noni
