Hi everyone,
Just a quick email to outline a development in the work we're all doing to improve women's safety on campus.
Earlier
in the semester I addressed the NTEU Women's Conference to present the
results of the Talk About It survey and the Safe Universities Blueprint.
The support was overwhelming and the women who attended moved a motion
at their National Conference to support and endorse the Blueprint and
encourage all members of the NTEU to support and cooperate with student
organisations in implementing them. The detail of the motion is in the
attached letter sent to the NUS President for addressing the Conference.
Combined with the Universities Australia endorsement and the
pressure that GetUp! will soon be placing on universities, we now have a
really strong case for universities to begin implementing the
recommendations.
Progress is starting to pick up - notably at La Trobe where Clare has
achieved some fantastic results and UNSW where one of the Pro-Vice
Chancellors and Kim are going well beyond what is contained
in the Blueprint. Even NUS in NZ has developed a safety survey of its own. However, plenty of universities are dragging the
chain.
Now that elections are coming to a close, it's a great opportunity
to meet with your university (and where possible/relevant, the new
office bearer), particularly the relevant Pro VC and VC, plus heads of
residences and service providers, outlining the support the document has
and the potential repercussions (GetUp) for not taking action.
It's also never too late to get your Collective to run a campaign especially with the skills we all shared at NOWSA this year!!
If you would like any support, or have any questions - please get in touch.
All the best,
Court
