Back on Thursday at Comic-Con, I finally got to see a first look at James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin, a movie I've been following for the longest time. In the film, Rain stars as Raizo, one of the deadliest ninja assassins in the world, who looks to avenge the death of his friend by betraying the clan that trained him. Not only is Rain's involvement quite exciting, but McTeigue's involvement, the same guy who directed V for Vendetta, is really what has me genuinely very excited for this. Not only did I catch up with McTeigue after the panel, but the presentation of footage was phenomenal. I really had no clue what to expect and finally wanted to see some footage and damn it looked awesome. This is every ninja fan's ultimate wet dream - an amazing assassin revenge movie complete with more ninjas that you could ever imagine.

Before I wrapped up the evening, I caught up briefly with McTeigue himself. Although he's personally inspired by Ninja Scroll, this was just something that came from their own imagination. "We've been talking about ninja movies for a long time," McTeigue recalled. In terms of the action and extreme violence, McTeigue stats that "if you're going to make a ninja movie, you've got to go there, and we went there." At one point, it was rumored that Ninja Assassin was a live-action remake of the Ninja Scroll anime, but that ended up being fake. Instead, McTeigue explains that "Ninja Scroll has a lot of cool set pieces, a lot of cool action pieces." He adds that he "was interested in making a cross between an anime, horror film, and also a bit of film noir." What I saw was exactly that and kicked ass!

Although this movie certainly won't be for everyone, I hope a lot of people still at least give it a chance. Ninja Assassin might just be the first awesome ninja movie we'll see and thus it's something no one should miss. I was expecting the footage to kick ass and it did - and that's actually quite rare at Comic-Con. Ninja Assassin is tentatively set for release on January 16th, 2009 from Warner Brothers so stay tuned!

@olli66 - no, you can't very the density or amount of lut used. You can buy the atomos Spyder probe, which calibrates the display for color, contrast and brightness. I use one on my ninja blade and have found the display to be completely trustworthy

Concerning movie magic in the fantasy world of a ninja is not a disgrace but purly just movie magic. To find a extreme betrayal to the art is ridiculous. As a young boy ninja movies not to mention Bruce Lee movies inspired me to enter the real world of martial arts. As any real practitioner would come to see, the real art is not the flash and dance one might see in a hollywood style film. Non the less, the films are an exaggeration of the real art and are meant to entice. Even Bruce had said that what you see in films would never work in real life senarios. But to be offended or question the authenticity of such films is to be ignorant to the art. One should be proud of the fact that the mystique that has surrounded the legend of the ninja has actually perpetuated the longevity of the art in the seekers of the true way. As MMA has become a houshold event all true martial art students have seen what has come of the art or arts they have studied. There is no hollywood flash and dance but only what really works from a real world view. I thank those who have made movies that serve as inspiration to the young to seek the truth of the arts.

S: RAIN, RAIN, RAIN! That boy is amazing and he has a lot of potential for crossover to America. Some of you may know him because he is Steven Colberts arch nemesis. He is also on tap to play Bruce Lee in a remake of Enter the Dragon. All the fighting was top notch and the special effects were amazing. Made me want to be a ninja.

Elizabeth is going to give the film 5/5 ninja throwing stars. OMG, did I just give this more stars than New Moon. This was a good story, excellent fight scenes and the best fake blood I have seen in a while. As far as martial arts/ ninjas in my apartment this film is number one this year and probably years to come (Karate Kid with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, who will ruin a classic!). Oh and did I mention it stars the Korean R&B sensation RAIN!!!

LOL! My Mom bought the DVD of this a few months ago. I liked it for the cute guy and the fighting scenes, but the gore was a bit much for me too.

It felt like more of a guys' movie, and the scenes in darkened rooms were annoyingly difficult to follow. The 'ninja magic' made me scrunch my nose in cultural irk, but the visual effects were fun to watch.

Conclusion: Not bad for killing time if you don't mind gore, but don't expect to learn anything.

As for why the other ninjas would kill him, mainly because they seem concerned with people in general knowing of their existence. And/or/less-reasonable, they had wanted to kill him before and hadn't realized they had failed.

Fire And Rain: Raizo (played by the Korean pop star Rain) is adopted by the Clan of the Black Sand and trained as a ninja, only to turn against them to avenge his girlfriend's death. Warner Bros. Pictures hide caption

Our hero is Raizo, played by long-haired Korean pop star Rain, who also appeared in the Wachowskis' disastrous Speed Racer. He's being tracked by Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris), a "Europol" agent who is convinced that the long-rumored ninjas are real. She's right about that, but wrong to fear Raizo. He turns out to be an anti-ninja, fighting against the Clan of Black Sand, which adopted, raised and trained him.

A series of flashbacks show how Raizo, a gifted student, came to break with the killers, led by the icy, sadistic Lord Ozunu (Sho Kosugi). The movie's depiction of ninja training is, of course, fictitious. Aside from its murderousness, though, the ninja academy does bear a certain resemblance to the real-life Beijing Opera school attended by such performers as Jackie Chan.

Legendary martial-arts performer Sho Kosugi plays Lord Ozunu, Raizo's original master and leader of the assassin clan. The historical Ozunu was an ancestor of the ninjutsu, commonly known outside Japan as ninja. Juliana Malucelli hide caption

As an apprentice ninja, Raizo couldn't protect his girlfriend from Ozunu's brutality. This being an action movie, he gets a second chance to save a damsel in distress when the Black Sandies decide that Mika is getting too close to the truth.

In the latest issue of Kungfu/Taichi magazine, I discussed in my column "Ninja Assassin" More Like Forest Devil Assassin" that although NINJA ASSASSIN is about Japanese ninja, the action fights look more like Chinese martial arts using Chinese martial arts-influenced fight choreography. I further noted that each series of techniques simply ends with a samurai or ninja-like pose. This was written prior to NINJA ASSASSIN's release and based on the trailers and publicity videos. Now, having watched NINJA ASSASSIN, I stand by my words, but my opinion of the film has turned much more positive. Among films with the best ninja action fights where you can actually see what's going on, Kuo Chue's Shaw Brothers film NINJA IN THE DEADLY TRAP (1981) and Ching Siu-tung's DUEL TO THE DEATH (1983) are still tops, but without a doubt NINJA ASSASSIN (NA) is the most exciting and engaging ninja film I have ever seen.

SPOILER ALERT. Rain drenches the screen as Raizo, one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, the orphaned Raizo is transformed into a trained killer by his rough, gruff and heartless surrogate father, Lord Ozuna (Sho Kosugi), the head of Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his heartthrob Kiriko by his "brother" Takeshi (Rick Yune), Raizo breaks free from Ozuna and vanishes into the shadows of the world. Ozuna and Raizo both become the lifelong number one nemesis of the other, each wanting to exact revenge - one for love, the other for honor and face. END SPOILER ALERT.

Elsewhere, in Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Mika digs into top-secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders as she makes the surreal discovery that the legendary nine ancient clans are real and that they have trained ninja assassins, who kill for 1000 ryos of gold (the Ogami Itto character in the LONE WOLF AND CUB series did it for 500…what a bargain he was). Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers led by Takeshi to make her lose face (i.e., de-face her). Yet when Raizo saves Mika, he "make a" mockery of the Clan and adds fuel to the clan-destine confrontation in which the result of this cat and rat competition will end in a final conflagration filled with confusion and contusion for all.

The film's New Zealand-born but Australian-based director James McTeigue shares, "Ninjas were the shadowy characters who always came out of the darkness. When I was growing up in Australia, we got anime from Japan and a lot of the TV serials as well, like THE SAMURAI and THE PHANTOM AGENTS, programs that had elements of the folkloric ninja in them, where the characters were raised in an orphanage or the like. For this film, we talked about those classic elements, but also adding an edgy film noir aspect to it."

"We incorporated parkour," Stahelski further relates, "a discipline of motion, of getting from point A to point B in the most efficient way possible, whether it's under, around or in a direct line over an obstacle like a wall or a fence, and free running, which is the essence of parkour but with more acrobatics and showmanship. We turned to parkour and free running because we wanted the ninjas to move a little differently, not to just run across the shadows, but to swarm or infest whatever location they happened to be in. They were going to be very athletic, very cat-like."
