Random problem with Workstation Manager authentication between reboots

I'm seeing some strange behavior with my XP SP2 workstations running the
ZfD 6.5 SP2 management agent (servers are Netware 6.5 OES SP5). All
workstations are local to the preferred server (same subnet and edir
partition) using the Netware Client 4.91 SP2 so no middle tier server
is configured. Preferred server is being delivered via DHCP option 85,
etc.
By looking through the WM.log file, I've been able to narrow the
problem down to one major symptom: After starting a workstation, it may
or may not successfully authenticate to eDirectory. The workstations
are imported into the tree with valid objects and if the workstation
authenticates, all is well -- I can remote control it, all applications
come down, policies, etc. If the workstation does not authenticate,
when I try to remote control it using Console One, I get the 1456 error
(which, by searching the forums, seems to be happening to more than a
couple people here including this thread -

usually issues with some policies or applications not coming down.
If authentication fails, it will never authenticate no matter how long
the machine stays up. If you reboot the workstation, it may or may not
authenticate. If it does not, you have to reboot it again, cross your
fingers, and hope it authenticates. If it does authenticate,
everything works perfectly. I can remote control it, all policies are
delivered, workstation associated applications are delivered, etc.
It may be important to note that I never have issues with users
authenticating. That works fine each and every time, even if the user
is logging in on a workstation that is in the un-authenticated state.
The part that baffles me is that this will happen in a seemingly random
fashion. For example, I can take a freshly imaged and imported
workstation and let it sit at a login prompt. I can see if it
authenticates or not by looking at the server console monitor screen
(or I can attempt to remote control it.) Without logging in, I will
restart it. About one minute later, it will be back at the login
screen. At this point, it may or may not be authenticated. I can
reboot it again and it may or may not authenticate. I can't determine
a pattern or a reason for this randomness. Between these reboots, I
touch absolutely nothing on the server. What would cause such
inconsistencies between reboots when nothing else is changing?
Below is some excerpts of the WM.log file that shows the machine in
both it's authenticated and not authenticated states.
I'm running out of patience with this problem (or bug) -- it's been
beating me up for over two weeks now! Thanks in advance to you folks

Thanks for the suggestion Craig. I'm familiar with the PortFast issue
from a few years ago when PXE wasn't getting a DHCP address due to the
initialization speed of my Cisco switches.
In the case of this issue, the workstation is plugged into an unmanged
switch and it is getting an IP address right off the bat from the PDHCP
server so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I'll double check it
anyway but I'm thinking there may be an issue with either the NWClient
or with eDirectory...

No real new developments yet. I'm planning on doing some more
troubleshooting the rest of this week. I have some "long-shot"
theories but I'm not too optimistic that they'll amount to any real
solutions. Please be sure to keep this thread posted if you have any
developments and I'll be sure and do the same thing.

Okay, first things first -- I haven't fully tested things to prove once
and for all that my problem is solved but I do think I know what's
going on so if it's not fixed, maybe Novell can fix it. Also, it's
quite possible that my situation is unique and that what's happening on
my network may or may not be happening on anyone else's...
Okay, in a nutshell, what I determined was that everything worked fine
(new image came down, workstation imported, workstation authenticated,
etc.) until my antivirus software (CA eTrust 7.1) was delivered via
force run. The delivery of the software wasn't the problem, the
updating of the signature was the problem. I'll try to explain things
a little further...
What I believe was happening was that the AV software installed (either
while the workstation was idle at a login prompt or while a user was
logged in) and after the software install was complete, a system reboot
was required to complete things. Once the system rebooted, eTrust
automatically started it's services in XP. One of these services is
responsible for checking for and downloading virus signatures that I
distribute to workstations via a UNC path on a NW 6.5 OES server. In
order to get eTrust to download from this local server via UNC, I had
to configure a "dummy" user and password that is used to authenticate
to eDirectory so it would have read rights to the folder where the
signature updates are stored. (FWIW, eTrust version 6.x didn't need
this dummy user but 7.1 does.) All this eTrust stuff works just fine
and obviously the dummy user only has enough rights to download the
signatures and nothing else.
Now here's where it gets interesting. I learned from the following
TID, (ID:10094650) http://tinyurl.com/s76s4, that Windows starts it's
services alphabetically when it boots. Since the Workstation Manager
is pretty much last alphabetically, the eTrust services were starting
much earlier than the WS Mgr. For some reason, if the eTrust service
authenticated via the dummy user before the workstation was able to
authenticate via it's own workstation object, the workstation was
unable to authenticate.
I was able to verify this was the case by performing various tests with
automatic signature updates disabled, etc. In every case, if the AV
software checked for updates on boot, the workstation wouldn't
authenticate. If the workstation didn't check for updates, the
workstation always authenticated. Also, I was able to compare the
times from the WM.log file and the eTrust distribution event logs to
verify when each service authenticated or attempted to authenticate.
The timing was so close (often times in the same second) that sometimes
the Workstation Manager would win the "race" and sometimes eTrust would
win. If the Workstation Manager would win, everything worked
perfectly. If not, there were many problems. It was a real crap
shoot.
Since the TID mentioned above deals with a similar timing issue with
regard to logging in and the Workstation Manager service starting up, I
decided to get a copy of the ZfD 6.5 SP2 hot patch referenced in the
solution and see what would happen. Late in the day today, I applied
the hot patch and did some preliminary testing. So far, so good. I
hope I'm not going to be disappointed tomorrow when we push things a
little harder to see if we can break it again! (I really am not in the
mood to start doing packet traces, etc. -- that's pretty much the only
thing left for me to do...) (Funny thing is that as of today, the TID
was updated with instructions on how to obtain the hotpatch for ZfD 7
as well.)
I hope I explained things clearly enough and I hope my experiences will
enable others with this problem to figure out how to solve it. My
suspicion is that even if you're not using eTrust, there may be
something forcing a connection to the server faster than the
Workstation Manager service is able to authenticate.

Very interesting, a timing issue, not the same cause as mine but same
theory.
We have a testlan at my work and everthing was ok there, but I have
managed to break it the same as our prod issue.
I have isolated it to a Edge Switch Multicast problem due to a
combination of settings and firmware on the switch.
Our testlan had a new version of firmware, I backreved the firmware to
match prod and mimicked the settings and wala same issue occured.
It would seem from what I have read that workstation authentication
uses multicasting to an extent, due to our environment segmenting
floors and the core swich by subnets that would by default block
multicasting.
So relating it to your order problem, the Remote Manager loads before
the Workstation Manager server, but will retry x amount of times
(waiting for WM to Authenticate to get the RemoteManager Policy
Settings), but if randomly multicasting traffic is not being received
then they dont authenticate etc.
Sorry for the confusion in my explaination.
So at the moment still trying to find the correct switch-router
settings to allow the correct multicast traffic with the newer
firmware.

DragonKF, your problem is clearly different than mine but it sounds like
you're slowly moving in the right direction. Sorry I wasn't able to
offer you anything to chase down.
As far as my problem goes, I might have spoken too soon on the hot
patch fixing the problem. Further testing today has proven that the
condition still exists -- even with the hot patch applied.
I'm now testing a new approach which is showing some promise early on.
It's a simple registry fix that causes the eTrust services to be
dependent on the Workstation Manager service so they won't start until
after the WS mgr is running.

Unless I'm missing something, I'll beg to differ.
The older version of eTrust (6.x) allowed a UNC path to a Netware
server to work the way you describe but in version 7.1, if you want to
use a UNC, you have to Mickey Mouse some settings in the InoDist.ini
file by giving it a user name (with context) and password. Further, if
you use the eTrust administrative console, you'll have to make that
file read-only so the settings don't get clobbered by the centralized
management.
Before I figured out this setup, I spoke to the CA tech support people
various times and they confirmed that UNC to Netware won't work and
suggested I setup an FTP server using anonymous access. I kept that as
a plan B (I wanted UNC as my plan A) and once I discovered my little
trick, everything worked fine. I asked CA to add fields for username
and password in the UNC setup pages and the tech said it was a good
idea and he'd forward it to the developers as an enhancement request.
(It'll probably make it into the product by version 22.x!)

I hear you! I don't think CA did anything intentional to cause it to
fail, I just think they didn't spend too much time testing a UNC path
update from a Netware server. It sure used to work -- I still have a
handful of older Win2K machines that do it without any problem.
One question -- what's a "ZENworks?" ;)

I recall from year or so ago a thirdparty utility that run as a service
that allowed mapping drives to Novell via Workstation Manager before
the User was logged in that might be worth looking up for your
problem.
Im still waiting for Novell to respond to my SR has been over a week

push out the registry settings needed to cause eTrust to wait until the
Workstation Manager service is started before starting it's services.
I tested it a little on Friday and all day Monday with no problems at
all.

In my own thoughts im fairly sure its a autentication timeout issue
(random), due to the Remote Service relying on the WM service to
autenticate in time. Maybe the next support pack will help it, there is
a Hotpatch 4 that seems to have alot of stuff for this type of issue
but we are not keen to apply a hotpatch into production.

distinction). 6.5 reached the end of "General Support" at the end of

basically it boils down to the fact that Novell won't provide any more

Meanwhile, can you not try hotpatch4 on a couple of test machines? you
say it's random, but you can reproduce it in your lab? How many reboots
does it take (about) to get a failure? Just trying to see what it would
take to be sure that you had a fix, assuming Novell can write one...

Yes, its occuring in the lab (test lan) and its random, somedays it
occurs everytime without fail, some days does not happen anywhere at
all.
Things I have notices, worked out. may or may not be correct.
1. PC Starts.
2. Services Start in Alpha Order.
3. Zen Remote Starts, reports workstation not authenticated (waiting
for wm service, retries x amount of times).
4. wm service authenticates to eDir
5. Zen Remote, either get edir Authication in time from wm service or
timesout.
6. If timesout puts icon in system tray via zentray.exe.
If wm authenticated in time then policy instructs zentray.exe to
not display icon.
Thats what I think is happening.
Now, Some times when the workstation has fully started, and the ws has
not authenticated in time displaying the systray icon, you can go into
services restart Zen Remote and the Icon will disapear. Sometime
however it will not until, you restart wm service first.
From a design point of view if 1-6 above is correct, then wm should be
set as a dependency service in the Zen Remote service and it is not. So
if at anytime of the day your network is sluggish or edir is sluggish
you will get this problem, if im correct in how it works.

I have a test lan so I can test the hotpatch but, Ive downloaded the
hotpatch 4 and found it to be 400mb has workstation side and server
side, so once I install its really hard to reverse being a server
installation as well. So my managers are against it because its not a
proper supported support pack.

Now for the two other problems.
Problem 2.

After upgrading a workstation from Zen 3.2 SP3 to Zen 6.5 SP2
Workstation polices may not apply correctly. ie Icons should not be
visable on Desktop and they are etc.
I have worked out that this goes away most of the time after a period
of time, so im thinkings its a policy schedule/timeout thing not sure,
so I have writen into the update script a section that deletes the
polices from /system32 before the update so that they come back down
from the server.
Hard to test this one as when done on a clean pc it always works ok,
only when I give it to a user that has had there pc for a long time,
and I have run out of test subjects prior to a full rollout.
Problem 3.

After upgrading a workstation from Zen 3.2 SP3 to Zen 6.5 SP2 the first
time a user login and NAL loads it will stay at the NAL Splash screen
for 10-15mins before displaying icons. If you interupt via reboot it
will not do it again. To get around this for now in the update script
upon the first start of NAL I have displayed my own splash screen over
the top that informs the user the pc will reboot again and then does so
interuping the delay.
I suspect this has something to do with a registry key in
LM/Software/Novell/Zenworks/NAL/Runonce (think thats the location)
Cant find anything on the entry it puts there that goes away after the
first load of NAL. But I suspect it as the problem.

for the purposes of your test, the server side isn't necessary. The
hotpatch is fully supported, it's just that it hasn't undergone the
same amount of testing that say a support pack would. I appreciate your
managers' concerns, and I would say that a hotpatch is something you
use because you can demonstrate that it fixes your problem, not just
because it's there ;)

Dont be sorry mate, you have given me a great deal of time and help,
myself and managers at my company greatly appricate it.
The Agent update has seem to fix another problem though, the NAL screen
was always the foreground window when you clicked on Icons while they
loaded but in the new Agent Version that seems to be fixed. The App
loading becomes the Active Window now.
I have a new Tech assigned to the SR now so your help has been great in
elevating the problem, so thanks once again.
I still think these formums are the best places to share and problem
solve together.

I hate to bring this back from the dead, however I am experiencing this
exact problem in my own network environment. Sporadic authentications
(hit or a miss), intermitent policy sucesses/failures, same logged
symptoms, we're even using the same eTrust 7.1 antivirus the OP
mentioned, however having eTrust services start after ZFDWM does not
resolve my issue.
Though I'm using the latest ZDM 7sp1 ir3a HP1 server-side and agents.

Running naldiag reveals the following line "Workstation Helper is Not
Connected as" in the App Launcher Component Status area (top right
corner)
I noticed at the trail end of this thread it seemed as though the
problem was passed on to an internal Novell techie so any resolution was
not mentioned here..
Any insight would be a blessing, I'm starting to pull my hair out ;)
