Trying to auto-install an NDPS Printer. Running nw6sp3 on the server,
client is 4.83sp2. I configured an NDPS Printer to Install onto
workstations in a specific group upon login. The printer and driver in
question is a HP LJ 4300 (using the ps driver). The printer auto-installs
fine on a 98 machine, however, on 2k (win2ksp4 on my machine) .. as the
printer is installing, I get a SPOOLSV.EXE error. If I go into the Start >
settings > printers, the printer shows up as "not available" , if I right
click the printer, I get an Explorer.exe error, then a message that states
the driver was not installed and will only show the spooler properties.

Is there a fix for this? just a problem with the driver?

Okay I read that there are problems with the 4300 driver, 4200, and 2300
using Ndps. Those replacement drivers that HP novell points you to for
those printers are only PCL drivers, we use a TON of pdf docs here, so
naturally, postscript is a helluva lot faster. What should I use? A dif
version of HP driver?

Hao about trying the PS driver for the HPLJ 4000? It should work on
the 4300.

I will try that.. looking at HP's site. Anyone know the dif between these
Point and Print bundles as opposed to the normal drivers?

Man :( I cant use the 4000 driver for the PCL because it doesnt have all of
my paper trays.. :sigh:
I have to install two NDPS printers for each printer, one for PS and one for
PCL (some programs print blank if using PS driver)

This is weird..

So, for 98 machines, i have the HP4300 PCL6 driver.. i created two
printers, one called "settlement pcl" and another called "paralegal pcl" ..
they are both using the exact same driver, however, when the paralegal
printer installs via auto-deploy, spool32 crashes. What would cause this?

Joe,
I am working on that one for a customer.
The spoolsv exception is not spoolsv btw, it is the HP driver
generating a message window that looks exactly like the windows
spoolsv. <sigh>
So up until now we are at the point where HP admits that their drivers
are broken in regards to NDPS.
These "Point and Print" drivers are old and have a different code
design. *And* they are no longer maintained, so no PS drivers as Point
and Print.
HP will only fix their current drivers. I am waiting for a reference
for that issue when Novell worked with HP on that problem. Then we will
have to go to HP and ask them to fix it.

Awesome, Kai. Thanks for letting me know..
incredibly frustrating... now im just getting random spool crashes (or what
looks like spool crashes) on 98. Its like once I install 4 PCL printers, it
wants to crash, sometimes on 3, doesnt seem to matter what the driver is.
Just wanna throw my arms up and give up :) not like its a *new* problem..
this is why i didnt implement ndps printers months ago. Anyway, hope we can
get HP to get on it... curious what you find out

I *think* i may have narrowed this down a little further.
I tried deleting all of these printers one by one, they all reinstalled
fine, i tried doing two at a time, worked fine.. when i got to three at a
time, the spool error occured upon reinstalling the printers after login.

Spool32 caused a page fault in HPBDMC32.DLL
Hope that helps

Joe,
on W2K/XP you see if it is a real spoolsv crash or not when you open
the printer list after the "crash" and you still see all printers.
If the printers are gone than it was spoolsv, otherwise it was this
fake message.
If it *is* spools you also need to update to the latest client patch.

hey Kai,
W2k/XP seems to be fine in regards to NDPS (unless youre using the latest Hp
drivers) I believe im using the PNP ones for PCL, and the Hp 4000 series for
PS (for the 4300 printers I have). Mainly getting problems in Win98, which
I believe is the actual spooler crashing. Im running client 3.4 on that
machine and dont see any updates to the client available.

Kai, have you found any reference #'s or anything for Novell reporting the

Kai!! I made huge progress today...

I was online with HP support talking to them about this 4300 PCL issue.
After a few hours they finally told me to call into HP, I called them and
after talking to two people, got someone useful/helpful in the Jetdirect
support team. I was on hold for 40 mins while this guy was running around
the office, calling engineers, etc. He stated that he knew the newer Hp
drivers had issues, before you couldnt even import them into the broker, but
Novell released a fix for that. I informed him of our problem with the
spooler crashes and that i had no problems importing the driver. I now have
a case number and its been escalated to third tier support or something,
they are suposed to call me back tomorrow.

One of the techs called me today. He had me try and remove the "Auto_cfg"
portion of the CopyFiles= from the driver inf file, this didnt work. so hes
trying to reproduce it.

See my mail? I dont see anything :) did ya send somethin?

We have been fighting with NDPS implementation for several weeks as
well and are very frustrated. Excuse my ignorance, but if these same
drivers work WITHOUT NDPS (which we know they do) and the same drivers
fail WITH NDPS....why is it an HP problem? I notice that in one of
these replies that Novell had supplied the patch that resolved the
initial problem with one driver......
