Running NetWare 6 SP3 and ArcServe 9.  About every 2 two mintues, the processor utilization goes up to 100% and hangs there for about a minute.  The busiest kernal shows to be NLS UpdateEntry.

I found a TID stating that if you run a dstrace with +emu you can see which object is having a problem.  The dstrace shows the connection number and it belongs to the ArcServe object in NDS.

At night, when no one is logged on, the utilization will drop.  Of course, that's also when the backup is running.  I've tried unloading ArcServe and the utiliziation still peaks every few minutes.

THe only document I can find on this issue relates to NW5 and NLS.  It said to unload NLS and rename the files to keep it from loading.  Is NLS a necessary thing in NW6?

In that case, make sure you apply the following patch:

NLS is for Netware Licensing System and it is the service that manages the
server licenses.

Actually, I had already done that.  I finally opened an incident with Novell yesterday.  I had already deleted and reinstalled the licenses, but I hadn't deleted the nlslsp object as well.   After deleting all three objects (nlslsp, server lic and user lic), ran a dsrepair, ran setuplsp and reinstalled the licenses, utilization has finally returned to normal.  Novell support is concerned, however, that the fix may not last.  Time will tell......
