Hello,

NW 6.5 (with or without SP1) creates on installation eDirectory objects with points.

For example:

DNS AG sv201-fw-cls1.uvex.de - SV201-FW-CLS1
IP AG 172.17.2.201 - SV201-FW-CLS1

That is strange for me, because in the past it was not allowed to create CN - objects with points.

With the new eDirectory it seems to be possible and the NW 6.5 installation creates automatically these strange objects with points.

Unfortunately our Backup Software Syncsort Backup Express 1.2.5D is not able to backup eDirectory objects with points.

Syncsort says, it is a problem of Novell.

What can i do?

Why does Novell creates eDirectory objects with points?

Does anyboday know, where these objects are used (in which NetWare application)?

Is it O.K. to delete these objects or what would be the disadvantages?

Thanks a lo in advance.

I forgot to mention that we have a syncsort setup and Legato. Syncsort will
issue errors, Legato will just not back them up and will not report any
errors.

I have the same problem, and got the same answer. Syncsort pointed me to a
document at Novell's site that says don't name objects with .'s. I find it
odd that Novell is going aganst its own documentation.

I was just going to re-name the objects, but I couldn't get a answer of what
uses the new certificates. It would be nice if somone can respond to this
issue in detail.

I am pleased to say that not every backup application is affected by this
problem. Because dots have been valid characters in object names for quite
some time, backup applications should have been prepared for that.

Not that I am disagreeing with you, but did you look into your product to
see if it is not like Legato and just doesn't display an error and does not
back up the objects. Are they in your restore indexes?

Here is the document on eDir 8.7.1 that says not to use .'s

Yes, I did. Yes, they are. I even deleted the objects with dots and verified
that they were correctly restored.

Thanks for the link but I sure you'll agree the reality overweighs anything
else. Try to create an object with name "..." or "///" from C1 and you'll
get no errors.

I got an patch from Syncsort and Backup Express is now able to backup these dot-objects properly.

Greetings.
