Hi All,

We are looking for a product that allows replication of specific directories
between Novell servers (5.1 and 6) across a WAN. We have some applications
at all of our sites that we wish to make copies back to a main central site
for data redundancy.

Novell replication services (which I have never used), I guess is
discontinued, and doesn't support 6.

We were going to use ArcServe mirroring, but it is going to cost us a
fortune for licensing.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

TIA,

GT

You might try RSync:

Anyone out there using this? I have installed it, but can't get it to run.
I get a :

"Loader cannot find public symbol: mkstemp for module RSYNC.NLM"

So I must be missing some support module, or something is out of date. It
says it supports NW5 SP6. Any ideas?

taskmaster from www.avanti-tech.com is very configurable and robust.

if you can't spend any money and want a bare-bones solution with basic
functionality: toolbox and cron can be cobbled together to do it.

Where did you find that NW5SP6 is supported?
If I check the README, it meantions that it requires at least NW 5.1 with
SP5.
Like many of the open source applications ported to NetWare recently,
RSNYC relies on the new LIBC libraries which unfortunately are not
available for NW 5.0.

I had problems with taskmaster. If it's local network it works fine,
but over T1/DSL does not work good. Support did not help.

RSYNC for Novell work very well. Try prev. version - works fine.

P.S. I just downloaded 2.56 (2.57) it it doesnot work . Novell 5.1

really. i'm surprised by that since you're the _first_ person i've
heard of to not be completely satisfied with taskmaster. and i've been
using and recommending it for, geee, maybe 10 years now.....

and yes, i like rsync too.

Can you elaborate a little on your use of TaskMaster and the problems you
have had, especially the support issues?
Who did you contact for support, was it the groups, Novell or Avanti?

We have used TaskMaster for around 5 years and it one of the finest
utilities we have used.

You mention you had problems using it over T1/DSL connections? we have the
same connections and it works fine, our network spans the entire UK (15
sites) and across Europe (another 15 or so sites) any problems we have had
have been resolved remarkably quickly by the Avanti support which is and
always has been second to none. We actually use on TaskMaster to pinpoint
problems with our infrastructure.

Please feel free to contact me via this group for any help.

Avanti are actually in the process of releaseing Version 4 of TaskMaster
which offers even more improvements to an already great product.

Dimach,

Gotta chime in here, since I've been using TaskMaster (and given
presentations for it for Fortune 15 companies), and never had a single
problem with it.

I'm no informercial, and others know me for my directness, and I'd be
all over them if I had an issue with it.

Can you please be more specific as to what issues you've had with it?
Maybe there's a configuration setting or the like with which we can help.

It works VERY well over T1/DSL links, even with just 256K links (hasn't tried 128K though)... however, if you have any routing-related issues (including SLP), you are going to have problems, and TM is not the only one that will have trouble with that.

Using over WAN links 128/256/768/T1/ISDN between USA/Europe/Australia
and have no issues with the product. What Exactly "does not work good"?

Like the other guys have already pointed out, TaskMaster is a very
reliable Sync product. I have about 10 remote sites on it now and I
have scheduled syncs every hour which work fine from a T1 all the way
down to a DSL VPN. The DSL VPN is slower, obviously, but it still
works very reliably. Avanti's tech support has been simply amazing
over the three or four years I've owned the product. Even if I e-mail
them at night, I frequently have a solution within an hour! If you're
having problems with it I would give them a call or e-mail them. There
have been occasional issues with LAN drivers and such that typically
Avanti already has a fix for.

We have run PCR-Dist from Pyzzo software (www.pyzzo.com) for a couple of
years to do replication to 5 novell & 2 W2K servers. It has been very
reliable, and easy to configure.

This is for Windows. It can be used to replicate to Netware but only via a
windows client.
TaskMaster is an NLM, it runs directly ON the Netware Server and allows
synchronisation (plus many other things) between Netware server directly
without the need for a windows client.

We use TaskMaster to Sync the volumes (60Gb) of approx 30 Netware servers
across the UK and Europe.
We also use it for capacity management, volume usage analysis, backups, auto
health checks + a few other things. Most of these scripts are downloadable
from Avanti, or easily created yourself. 10/10

Seems like an interesting product but it is not NetWare aware (i.e.,
NetWare attributes, Ownership, Trustees, IRM, etc. are not synchronized).
In addition, it is a Windows workstation application, not an automated
Server management utility. Licensed by Node for Windows workstations, it
probably works great for Windows synchronization but might prove less
than ideal for NetWare synchronization or disaster recovery.
