I have a ServeRaid 4L controller using 3 drives in a RAID 5 array. I am
using the ServeRaid agent to remotely monitor the status of the arrays.
Today I found that one of the scsci hard drives is indicating PFA errors,
but the drive is indicated as OK and ONLINE. I have ordered a
replacement. To replace that faulty drive; set the drive to defunct then
remove the hard disk then install the replacement..? I am asking because
I finally setup all my servers to remotely monitored this way and found
this one error. Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciately.

Thanks,

John

I only have the one server with a 4L in it. I had a disk fail <ish> with that
server. Rather than set it as bad, I just pulled it. (just a little until the
platter stops spinning) and then plugged the replacement straight in. Done.

Done.

Tim,

I am concerned that removing an indicated OK drive will wipe out the
array. The other times when I removed drives from arrays were when I had
found them in a defunct state.

Thanks,

John

Certainly neither a Compaq nor an IBM will complain, if you think of it, this is
what happens when a drive fails, it goes off line - voom. By pulling a drive
you replicate the worst fault it could have, nothing more.

And you will take a backup before you start this little exercise won't you!

Tim,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
