Hi,

I have a BorderManager 3.5 Server with Netware 5. My server comes with an
internal
backup tape device. However, it has not been used for a long time. (Don't
know why previously not used) How do I detect the tape drive from the
server? Thanks.

It depends on whether it's SCSI or IDE.

At the console prompt: <scan for new devices>

Then You should be able to see it with BU software if the SCSI controller
for the drive is being loaded. If you don't see it, then it's time to open
the box and see who's home and are they physically connected since they may
have had a problem with BU and disconnected it as a simple solution to
*that* problem. It's not unusual for that to happen when they builder sets
the system up with a HD and tape drive on the same controller.

Is there any command for me to enter to detect the tape drive??

Typically, no.

When you boot a SCSI controller it looks out on the chain to see who's
there. Standalone tape drives are normally reported in the SCSI BIOS,
Autoloaders typically are not.

In the boot cycle Netware should see the drive, but won't report it or try
to load a driver. Backup Exec will find the drive of you scan for it and
usually after a boot. Other backup software handle discovery a little
differently. Nova doesn't report it, but seems to be quite adept at finding
new devices.
