For the first time since I put Service Pack 6 on my Netware 5.1 server,
I am trying to restore a file using ArcServe 6.6, SP4. All indications
are that my backups have been running. There appears to be something
stored on the tapes. But when I go in to ArcServe Manager and try to
select a file to restore, I cannot get the list of files to display.
All I can see are my volumes. I don't need to restore the entire
volume!

Has anyone experienced this problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?

Thanks!

It's been awhile since I used ARCserve, so bear with me. I recall in
AS you can do various types of restore, such as media-based,
volume-based, etc. If you attempt a media-based restore and the files
are not showing up, it's likely that your backup session detail isn't
getting logged to the database. Try a Merge.

Failing that, if you know the filespecs you need restored (don't have
to browse for them, in other words) you can restore the whole volume
but use a filter to allow only your specific files to be restored. If
you do it this way I recommend you redirect the restore, just in case
something goes awry and your filter doesn't work the way you expect.

If your Merge doesn't seem to work -- you still can't browse through
the tape sessions and select individual files -- there are two things
that can fix this. First one is to make sure you have the correct
setting in ASCONFIG.INI. I believe the item is called UseMergeDaemon.
Check on CA's website for the specifics. It's been too long for me...

If that doesn't work, then your only option is to refresh your DB from
the EMPTYDB folder. This wipes out everything in the DB, but if you
can't get to it anyway... If you want to try this, copy your existing
DBs to another folder for safekeeping, just in case you wind up needing
them for something. As for the exact DB(s) you need to refresh, I'm
sorry I don't recall, but you can also get that from CA's website.

Thanks so much Barry. It was a database problem. I was able to merge a
tape in and restore the file! I never thought about that, since I have
not gotten any corrupt database errors lately

Thanks again.
