Hi, I try to run BackupExec 8.5 on my NW 5.1 SP4 server but the server
"freezes" when I start BE and I have to shutdown the server by pressing the
powerbutton.

I have upgraded the scsi (adaptec) nlm and that has not worked, Even tried
to update the perc2 nlm´s on my Dell PowerEdge 2500.

Downloaded BE 9.0 and when I start that on it says:
Error:1004
A timeout occurred waiting for NDMPD.NLM to initialize.

BE8.5 does not display any message at all it only "freezes" on startup when
it is in progress to initalize the tape drive.

The budget does not allow me to buy BE9.0 or BE9.1 so I have to get BE8.5
started, any ideas?

Regards
Niklas

Niklas, are you using BECDM with 8.5 or NWASPI? Latest BE 8.5 version?

Hi,

I have the BackupExec Build 8.5.194.1 and I use BECDM and in the bestart.ncf
is like this

SEARCH ADD SYS:\BKUPEXEC\NLMS
LOAD BECDM.CDM
LOAD BKUPEXEC.NLM -tl -aa -dy -s

Ah, that's what could cause the problem - make the following changes:
1. take out the LOAD BECDM.CDM line
2. add a -b switch to the LOAD BKUPEXEC.NLM line

(see http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/254179.htm)

See Michael's reply about the start up sequence.

BE 8.5 versioning is somewhat opaque -- in my 4.2 server running 8.5 (I
prefer BE 8.5 on my 4x servers and BE 9x on my 6x servers), the version
reported is 8.5 4106.

Hi,

I removed the LOAD BECDM.CDM line from the bestart.ncf and added a -b switch
to the LOAD BKUPEXEC.NLM also

but the server still "freezes" on startup when

it is in progress to initalize the tape drive.

I will try to find a newer BE8.5 than BE8.5.194.1 and I will try the
BE9.1.0306.12 also.

If you have any more ideas about what it could be I would appreciate it a
lot.

Niklas

Additional information and questions

The NWASPI.CMD is version 3.22.
No problem just loading NWASPI.

Could it be a problem with the Tape drive partition?
How do I remove the tape drive partition and create a new one if I can´t
start BE?
If I remove the tape drive, can I start BE and remove the partition?

Ew, bad version - had a bad memory leak IIRC. You need to get hold of
v3.21

> No problem just loading NWASPI.

If you're going to use the -b switch with 8.5.194.1, make sure that
NWASPI.CDM isn't loaded at all. Otherwise, if you remove the -b switch
and use NWASPI.CDM, make sure that it's the version I listed above.

You shouldn't be loading NWASPI if you plan on using BECDM -- if NWASPI (or
NWTAPE) is loading, unload them manually prior to using BESTART.

I installed BE9.1 and got the same error message as BR9.0

Error:1004
A timeout occurred waiting for NDMPD.NLM to initialize.

BUT...

this time I closed down BE with bestop and started it again. I didn?t try
that with BE9.0 and with BE8.5 the server "froze" so I could not try it.

When i started BE9.1 again it worked fine and now I?m going to se if it can
take a backup of my servers.

Will try to change the NWASPI.CDM to v3.21 next week and install BE8.5
again.

Just got to have a backup of my systems it was almost 2 weeks ago now :) I?m
afraid something will happen.

Sorry, don´t need it. Using my old remote agent for 8.5 and it seems to work
so far.

Hi,

Now I have done a backup of my systems using Backup Exec 9.1. It works but a
strange thing is when I use a backup tape that I?ve used to make a backup
with BE9.1 it says it has an overwrite protection. I have tried several
tapes and it says the same thing soon I will run out of backup tapes if I?m
unable to to use a tape for more than one time on BE9.1.

All the tapes has worked fine before on BE8.5.

Any idea?s?

I've seen that with BE 9.0 but not with BE 9.1 -- with BE 9.0 what I did
was run an erase job on the tape first -- you have to run that in
interactive mode since you'll get alerts you need to deal with. Takes a
minute or less to do per tape.

Ok, thx, erasing the tape first did work great.

Another thing about my neverending problem with backup?s is that now I can
start BE9.1, I can make a backup whitout any problems but then I try to
restore a file I get an errormessage:

Translation error on media in HA:2 ID:6 LUN:0 COMPAQ DLT VS 40/80.

I have tried different types of files and also tried to keep the original
restore path and changing it also. All the files came from a Windows 2000
server.

Ah -- not run into this myself, not sure where that is getting generated
from, I have restored ok in my set up with a DDS-4 drive to my Windows 2K
workstation as well as the NW 6.0 SP3 server.
