Greetings,

I'm having a problem I can't seem to correct. I purchased
Arcserve9 for Netware single server edition (only have 1 novell server)
a few months back, and it has been working fine untill 2 days ago.
Novell 5.1 server SP6. Fully patched. Arcserve 9 fully patched. The box
is a compaq proliant 5500 with 1 gig of ram, dual xeons, raid 5.

I have downloaded applied pervasives updates to the server prior to
loading the new backup software. Everything was going fine until I
rebooted the server the other day (I stopped AS first before the server
bounce) and when it came back up I manually loaded astart. AS starts to
load, gets past loading canwpabd and finding the tape drive, hits pre
flight check during the SCSI scan and hangs there. Here is the csloader log:

Is it me or is suddenly timing out on the SCSI bus scan? Thats what it
looks like to me. However it had been working like a charm. I can find
nothing on CA's KB relating to this. After it hangs at this point for 5
minutes or so it pops up an error box and tells you to switch to the
console and that PFC.NLM did not load. At this point if you try to
unload or load or even use the console, it locks up the console
completely and you have to recover with a cold boot.

Any help would be appreciated, I hope I listed all the info needed.

Thanks...

Brandon,

The log you posted looks perfectly normal.

Possible reasons reasons for your problem might be:

1) Hardware related problems. Maybe you did a warm boot and that left the
tape drive in an inconsistent state which Arcserve could not resolve at
startup

2) Conflicting drivers.
As you are using CANWPA.CDM, you should double check that none of the
following drivers are being loaded:
NWASPI.CDM, NWTAPE.CDM, DLTTAPE.CDM

3) But in your storage drivers. Try to update your HAM drivers with the
latest versions from the HP/Compaq web site

4) Hardware problem. Maybe your SCSI controller, cable or streamer are
faulty.

This is what I was possibly thinking. I unloaded Arcserve and ran
vrepair on all my Volumes then warm booted the server the day this
started to happen. When the server came back up is when I ran Astart at
the console and this began.

Aye found this out a long time ago. I double checked though, and only
CANWPABD.NLM is loading.

I'll look into this. I seem to recall looking a few weeks back and not
finding anything new though.

I ran a full system Diagnostic yesterday when I came in to work on this
some. Everything checked out fine on the hardware side.

Thanks

Checked the PFC.ERR file and found this. The Compaq diagnostics tell me
all is normal though.

Looking up those error codes now, although the previous ones never
stated anything helpful.

For those of you that like to keep on the up and up, I reload AS7 and
it's backing up fine. At this point I am fairly certain its related to
AS9 software and now my hardware, or in how the software interprets my
hardware. I may open a call with CA, I would much prefer to use version
9 if able. Anyone else out there with Compaq Proliant 5500 servers
seeing this? Would like some collaboration if possible.

Thanks...
