We will be adding a new server that has been at a different division, to
our tree in the near future. I have been searching for articles and
information on completing this task. I assume the correct way to bring it
in is by migrating. Any help in finding detailed instructions. I have
some instructions from my Netware book but it doesn't seem to be as
complete as it should be.

Are you wanting to merge the existing tree with the tree that the server
was in at the other division? Or will you be removing NDS from the
server before you bring it over?

Assuming NDS has been removed from it already, just connect it up where it's
going to physically be with the right IP and/or IPX addresses, then just
load nwconfig - directory options - install NDS.

I will be merging the new server which does have NDS on it, into an
existing tree which already has 5 organizations already in the existing in
it. Therefore, the new server needs to come in as a new organization
under the root.

I assumed it would be more difficult than that from what research I have
done. Is there any special settings or version conflicts I would need to
watch for before the merge. If one server is not up to date on all
patches that does not affect the other does it? Thank you for this info,
I am truly amazed it wouldn't be more difficult.

Does NDS need to be removed from the server that is being brought in?

If NDS has already been removed from the server, you are not doing a merge.
You are simply adding a new server to an existing tree. As long as the
DS.nlm is reasonably recent you are cool.

It does not have to be, you can merge the trees if you would like. If
you remove NDS, you just have to reinstall NDS on it using
nwconfig->directory options and select to install it into an existing tree.

All servers in the tree currently have NDS 7.55 except two, one has 7.51
and the server I want to bring in would have 7.51. Is that going to be
kosher with this volume? I was looking for the service pack that included
the 7.55 version but could not find it on the site, as I thought perhaps I
should install with the new version?

Depends on your NW and SP versions, which you haven't told us.

Sorry. NW version 5.009.

I think offhand that's NW51 with SP5? I'd just apply NW51Sp6 .

What would happen if I would attempt to bring this new server in and
problems arose with the network. Could I immediately remove the ip
address or disable the connection to eliminate the immediate problem?

Not necessarily. It may start to get a copy of NDS and fail part-way.
leaving NDS in a non-syncing state for instance. We'd then need to clean up
NDS.

OK, checked out most of the servers, all but one has NW5.1 SP3. I'm not
sure what the one at the other division has yet. Apparently their belief
here was if it was working, don't bother with the service packs. We also
have Border Manager and a GroupWise server in the batch and I guess they
thought the service pack upgrades had problems with GroupWise or something
to that effect, so they didn't bother upgrading. I assume these
definitely should be all upgraded to SP6?

I've kinda lost track of what problem we're trying to solve here. Aren't you
just putting a server back in the tree? If so, and it's on the same SP as
the ones in the tree, no, there's no need to patch it and them up just to
get it in.

If you're also trying to get DS and NW up to date, yes by all means apply
SP6, or maybe wait a few days and see how SP7 works out.

Sorry! Yes, I am try to add a new server to a tree. I just wanted to
clarify the fact that the DS versions were different and would it make a
problem since one was 7.51 and the others were 7.55 version. I just
wanted to simply bring the 7.51 up to date with the 7.55 but cannot
locate the service pack 3 that apparently brings it up to date. So, I
begin worrying about having to update all servers to service pack 5 since
it was the last one I could find on line. I didn't want to really take
the time to do that before bringing in the server, that was the reason
for trying to find the sp with 7.55 in it. I apologize, as I have never
done this before and I don't want to cause a big problem on the network.
