NetWare 5.1 SP6
ZFD 3.2 SP2
eDirectory 8.6.2 SP3??? (DS.NLM Version 10350.13 November 12, 2002) (not a
replica holder)

Been noticing last couple of weeks Monitor showing thousands of open files
and slowly climbing. This morning the box was so bogged down it would slow
down any login script mapping to it for a minute or two.
After restarting and searching for new files I came upon PRODAUD3.DB in
\SYS\SYSTEM and it appears its being refreshed about every 5 minutes.

Searching the Novell forums I found the following threads below that tie a
slowly climbing, high number of open files eventually locking up a NetWare
5.1 SP6 server with NLSMETER in SP6.
Supposedly unloading NLSMETER is a temporary workaround. In practice after
unloading CONNAUD and it, they'll both reload a few seconds later.

Its currently hovering around 240 open files.

Will this be resolved in SP7 for NetWare 5.1? Any other suggestions?

Sounds like the FILESYS.NLM issue.

Have you tried "Set Client File Caching Enabled=Off" ?
Reset the server if this was not previously set.

No Idea if SP7 will fix it, but I'm sure it will promise to.

Craig,

Can you enlighten me on the details of the FILESYS.NLM issue?

File caching has been off on our NetWare servers for years. Verified just
in case. :>

Over lunch yesterday open files mysteriously dropped back to around 80.
PRODAUD3.DB is still being modified reguarly.

Thanks,

Tony

According to a statement of a support-engineer (around oct 03)
its an issue with nlsmeter.nlm. Support said a few month ago
they have a new one in the pipeline.
so far i saw nothing. Maybe SP7.......

what i did here was to setup a cron job that runs
at 6am that unloads connaud.nlm and nlsmeter.nlm ( in that order )

since then no more problems

hope this helps

kind regards
Andy :-)

Thanks for the confirmation Andy.

This box has now been up for 2 weeks and I haven't seen it go above 150 open
files. Usually hovers between 80 - 130.
Going to keep an eye out for SP7 just in case it acts up again.

Thanks for the info,

Tony
