I'm having a problem with one of our servers. I recently upgraded to NW51
SP6, and have loaded the latest JVM 1.3.1 available. Now when I quit the
X-Windows GUI on the server, the screen goes black, and has a flashing
cursor in the upper left hand corner. I cannot gain control over anything,
even with a CTRL-ALT-ESCAPE. The only option is to reset the server.

Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi,

Never seen that before. Can you try to alternative methods of exiting
the GUI, and see if they behave differet?

1. Hit CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE within the GUI.
2. Just enter "java -exit" on the system console.

CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE will let me back to the command line.

However, to add to the situation, I'm wondering if JVM isn't screwed up
somewhere. I was able to install the APC Powerchute Software, which
requires JVM 1.3.1, but it does not behave the same as all my other servers,
including communication to the master server. Every other server with an
identical setup works.

Any suggestions I should try? Re-installing SP6? Any config files?

Thanks,

Ryan

More details please. How does it behave different?

It exits straight to the console prompt. Also, having the GUI open and
using CTRL-ESC to switch to console will also leave it hanging, with the
cursor flashing.

Well, I was referring to the APC application, how this behaves
different. But your description actually does sound a bit like a
graphics card (or driver) problem. You may want to try to execute
vesa_rsp.ncf from the system console to reset the GUI to default
configuration.
