Fixed this one, but as I couldn't find anything either in here or on
Novell's support site I thought I'd post the cause/fix to share:

Running NW5.1SP6a

Whenever portal.nlm was being loaded, the server would either abend with
a 'auto-restart' message, or go into a reboot loop (i.e. no abend, just
see the screen flick to loading...).

With portal.nlm commented out, the server would load fine. ABEND.LOG
showed an EIP in server.nlm running process Outbound Mail Process.

This turned out to be a corrupt server registry.

To fix this I ran 'display modified environment' on the console screen so
I had a copy of all modified server settings from default (saved to the
console log file), brought the server down, deleted all servcfg.* files in
c:\nwserver, brought the server back up, re-applied all server settings,
then portal.nlm would correctly load.

After successfully loading portal I was then able to re-enter the portal
notification settings/thresholds and I'm now back in business.

Thanks for the information. Maybe you could also post your actual
ABEND.LOG file so that people can see the actual patterns in it like the
stack trace for instance.
