Hi,

recently just change the external tape drive to exactly the same model.
However, using the new tape drive, it can't detect the tape drive and
tape media as well. Thus i am unable to perform any backup. try to run
astop6 and astart6 again but to no avail. What is the problem? It can't
detect the tape media inside. It prompts: "Cartridge not in place"
Help please.

Maybe you are using a different LUN that's stepping on the LUN of an
internal device?

Is it the same SCSI ID as the old tape drive? ARCserve will look for
the tape drive to be at the old SCSI ID. When you create a tape device
group in ARCserve (in the Device Manager) it records the drive model
and SCSI ID in the config file. If the SCSI ID is changed, you will
need to add the new drive (new as far as AS is concerned) to the tape
device group, or create a new group and add the new drive to it.

Match the number in the itty-bitty window on the back of the tape drive to
the number in the itty-bitty windows on the old tape drive.

The little nubbins that stick out above and below the itty-bitty window
change the number in the window when you push them.

Like Dave says... plus, look in the manual that came with your tape
drive.

It matches the number on the device configurations. but after an astop6
and astart6, it still cannot detect the tape. Error : Cartridge Not in
Place. Must I reboot the server??? Tried once but same error.

You need to reboot the server. When you do it watch for the SCSI bios and
note whether the tape drive reports itself correctly.

If the BIOS sees the tape drive, then you need to make sure the tape is OK.
We might be able to help there, but probably the best bet will be to call
the manufacturer of the tape drive and get some help there.

Try a reboot (that is, completely power off/on).
Once the server is up, go to the server command prompt and issue the
command LIST DEVICES. Do you see your tape drive there? If you see
anything named "Unbound device", that is probably your tape drive, but
you do not have the necessary CDM loaded for NetWare to recognize it
properply. As a test LOAD NWTAPE.CDM and SCIS2TP.CDM, then LIST
DEVICES again. You should be able to see your tape drive.

NOTE: Do NOT use SCSI2TP and NWTAPE along with ARCserve. It will cause
problems and interfere with ARCserve's ability to access the tape
