Hi All,

I plan to get a back solution for the following server:-

Name
Brand
Model
S/N
Netware

Server3
COMPAQ
PROLIANT 800
8708BJW30408
3.x

Server4
COMPAQ
PROLIANT 400
7910CJT20236
4.x

Server5
COMPAQ
PROLIANT 400
7917CJT20053
4.x

EDP
HP
NET SERVER LC 2000
5042-4832
3.x

Rather then getting each server a solution I plan to centralized this. Is it
possible? How to go about it?

Thank you.

Go to http://www.veritas.com. Look at your options with Backup Exec 9.1

Does BE 9.1 actually work with NW 4x -- I thought it was much more Java and
IP centric.

I don't think it does, but I never tried it to know for sure. I remember
some funny stuff related to IPX and 8.5 or 9.0, but only in a vague sort of
way.

No, 9.1 does NOT work with NW 4.

Should work fine as a remote agent at least -- probably better under
IPX than IP. There's a NW411 folder under SYS:BKUPEXEC that has some
4x specific NLMs. Actually, it looks like these modules are for a
media server, but I wouldn't swear to it being supported that way.

But the four servers listed here are NetWare 3x and 4x (2 of each) if I
read the listing correctly.

For that combination, I'd go with the Enterprise version of BE 8.5 -- the
caveat being -- tracking it down.

Hi Barry Schnur,

Yes! You read the content correctly. In that case if I purchase Enterprise version of BE 8.5 will it workable for both 3.x & 4.x? Can I centralized this process and is it still available from Veritas?

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Arulthas.

8.5 isn't supported on 3.x (see
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/230310.htm)
Also see http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/262020.htm for the end of
support date.

Although it's still supported, I don't know if Veritas are still selling
it.

I think though that the 8.5 Enterprise version includes support for remote
backup of 3.x servers. I seem to recall running that combination myself
two or three years ago.

I recall having run Enterprise 8.5 to support a two server configuration
here -- backing up my NW 3.2 server to a tape drive on the NW 4.2 server.
Basically, what you do is install the Enterprise software on the 4.2
server, and push the agent out to the 3.x server. You administer the
backup process for all the servers from the 4.2 server with the full
version of the software (not just the agent) installed.

Now for the bad news, Veritas stopped offering 8.5 a fair while ago -- they
have been (in my view) too quick to stop sales of their older products.
This particular case is the most bothersome as while BE 9.1 *will* run on
4.2 servers (at least according to Veritas notes), I find that BE 8.5 on a
4.2 server makes more sense.

It may be possible to cajole Veritas to provide an enterprise license
serial number for 8.5 (you can still download BE 8.5 from Veritas I think),
by purchasing the equivalent license for BE 9.1.

Ah yeah, good point - that does work as a remote agent. To be honest
though, I don't see the point of paying out for the Enterprise Edition
(if he can!) when it's only going to be supported for another 3 months.

Well, he has a mixed NetWare 4.x and 3.x network, not clear that being
supported is a concern in this scenario.....

Hi All,

In that case, is there any alternative software that i can use other than Veritas?

Any solution to my issue?

thank you.

As I noted, you might be able to cajole the Veritas folks here -- if you
let them know you are willing to purchase the current version (ie $$$) but
need to deploy the older version and so will need a working serial number
for 8.5.

Also, the version you are looking for is on offer in an Ebay auction:

Ah -- missed that. I was mostly replying to counter that reply that
stated 9.1 would not work with 4x, when it does.

Understood -- at least they note formal support for NW 4.2 (which
effectively means NW 4.11 SP9 as well).
