Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to rename the default Supervisor account for
Netware 3.12, or if it is at all possible?

Thanks!
Ivan

Possible? Yes. Something you should do? Definitely no. What are you
trying to accomplish?

Hi

I'm not so sure it can really be done without jumping through some real
horrid hoops... and I recommend that you do not.

Are you concerned about security?

User SUPERVISOR:

* Cannot be deleted or renamed and is assigned ID number 1.

* Has all rights to all directories; these rights cannot be revoked.

* Has no initial password so that the network supervisor can log in to
the file server to set up the network environment.

Felton,

Yes it's about security. It is an audit requirement for my company to
rename important accounts to a non-conventional name to prevent illegal
access.

However, that of course has to be balanced with technical considerations.

Thanks all for your help! Really appreciate this forum!

Regards,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Then I recommend that you make the supervisors account have a password
that's really obnoxioue. I use a 15 alpha-numeric

and another problem is access to the server itself. There are programs out
on the internet that will allow access to the server IF they have access to
the physical console. That should also be a consideration.

Nah, 15 is easy, make it 20, and of course, set it to require a different
password every day.

Then make it a requirement for the auditor to maintain the account.

Of course if it's an Andersen based audit requirement, 20 might = 1.

LOL... I have considered making it longer, but the other people who have to
remember the password get upset as it is.

Perhaps what you really need are new security auditors, then, since
"security by obscurity" (which is what you get by changing account
names) is really no security at all. Instead, they need to understand
the password rules for the various systems you're using.

Do you have a back door account with full supervisor rights in case
supervisor walks out the door and gets smacked by a bus, and do the auditors
know about it? How many users have S rights in root?

Those goof ball auditors don't usually look for things like that.
