I would like to know if I want to reinstall a new server (3.12), but retain
the original server info, such as bindery info, user info, etc, what files
should I backup first from the original server? Now, I only have a copy of
3.12 NW on hand. In order to prevent NW 3.12 from getting errors resulting
from the problem of Y2K, what should I do ?

Take a look at Bindfix and bindrest

Bindfix is a repair tool, but it takes a backup before it starts.
Bindrest replaces the bindary with the backup that a bindfix created.

If your backup software is "NetWare aware", then it will take care of
backing up the bindery. If not, follow Tim's recommendation and run
BINDFIX (twice, once to fix any errors then once to get a good
backup). Move the files SYS:SYSTEM\*.OLD to the new server and run
BINDREST. Do this before restoring or moving any files.

If you only move files, by the way, the trustee rights won't go with
them. Another reason to use a NetWare aware backup application.

Thanks Dave, Tim, and Barry for all your valuable suggestions!

However, if I also want to restore the trustee right, and the users' right
to file/directory to the new server, but I haven't got any backup
application such as NetWare aware backup, so can I do that?

The bindfix/bindrest process will get a bunch of that done for you.

Note, regarding netware aware workstation backup -- Backup Exec for Win9x
(which you pick up for say about $50) will let you do that -- and do that to a
local hard drive.

Doesn't Portlock have a freebie if you're under a gig?

Now that's a viable option

As Felton alluded, you can download the eval version of Portlock's
Storage Manager for Netware at:
