Server insists that the year is 1988

1988. I can correct the date manually with the SET command and as long as
the server is up the date will be right (it will be 2002 NOT 1902 that I am
positive of). If I boot the server, the date will again be 1988. The
system bios is set to the current date. Where is Netware pulling this date
from?

Oh my...
I'd do the following:
1. You need to apply the lib312d.exe update and the strtl8a.exe updates.
The clib being outdated can cause the memory errors..
2. I'd also put a:" set reserved buffers below 16 meg = 300"
statement in your startup.ncf file.
3. a purge /all from root of sys is also in order
4. I'd bump ram up to 256 MB
5. I'd also get the latest lan drive for the NIC

I thought that I already did the lib312d.exe update. As for the

Not a problem on this machine, but I'm not allowed (if you can believe it)
on the actual Novell servers here. There is too much paranoia about it.
It's an unfortunate thing when your superiors know little to nothing about
computers or networking and they get to call the shots.

I can run it again (becuase I've changed a couple of things since before),
but the problem still persists, so I do not believe that my changes will
make any difference in the diagnosis.

Ok.. post it after you've run the lswap and applied the lib312d.exe update
and we'll see what else is happening.

The LSWAP.EXE (loader patch) applies updates to server.exe. There are at
least THREE areas where server.exe updates are needed:
1) Memory registration
2) Date handling (which also requires that LIB312D.EXE be in place)
3) Public symbol errors (which manifest when one tries to use current
specification disk and network card drivers).
Here is the procedure to use:
LSWAP EXE
============
The defaults used in the command lines are from Netware 4.1x handling so for
the typical 3.12 server update, if it does update automatically, you will
need to not only run it manually, but make sure that you use the correct path
setting.
Both LSWAP.EXE and LSWAP.NLM use the same command line options. First
option specifies the location to LOADER.EXE.
(DEFAULT:C:\NWSERVER\LOADER.EXE).
The second option specifies location to SERVER.EXE or MSERVER.EXE.
(DEFAULT: C:\NWSERVER\SERVER.EXE).
So, it the typical scenario where you need to run this manually from the DOS
prompt in the C:\Server.312 directory, you need to do the following:
1) Make sure that both LSWAP.EXE and LOADER.EXE are in the Server.312
directory.
2) Then use the following command syntax:
LSWAP C:\SERVER.312\LOADER.EXE C:\SERVER.312\SERVER.EXE
3) When this is done, you should end up with a SERVER.EXE with a new date and
a copy of the old server.exe as SERVER.OLD with the old date.

thread about it. When I run the installation (and I'm sure that I am doing
so by the letter), the server doesn't boot. It halts and causes a core
dump. The only remedy is to rename the server.old file back to server.exe.

don't blame anyone here for that. Yes, I've tried to run the lswap.exe. As
I've said above, it won't work. I know that I have done so correctly and
I've tried every method (DOS, the NLM from console and even manually copying
and renaming the files myself). The server.exe (which I've tried
downloading again in case it was corrupt) that gets put in just won't boot
up right. It gives me a core dump message instead. The only cure seems to
be to rename the server.old back to server.exe.
