We have an NSBS5.0 SP6a server Dell Poweredge 2300 PII400Mhz, 768MB, 9GB
SCSI 10000RPM, Intel 10/100PCI NIC which seems to be running fine.

That said it seems to take forever when trying to copy files on the server
to different directories or when copying files to or from the server from
the workstations.

We run NT workstations with client 4.8 and 4.6 as well as Win98 Client 3.32.
None of the clients offer any improvement in file copy speed.

Server and client NICs are set to Full Duplex 100mbps and have tried
modifying the settings but still with no improvement on file copy speed.

Also SET MAXIMUM CONCURRENT DISK CACHE WRITES from the default 50 to 400.

Any ideas how to speed things up gratefully received.

Execute "config /s" on your server, remove your serial number from the
resulting sys:\system\config.txt, and post it here.

Hi,

This looks fine, except that your NIC is forced to 100 Full Duplex. This
is a highly problematic setting, and will lead to duplex mismatches 100%
of the time if not your swicth is set to full manually too. If the
switch is set to full manually, it will still fail in around 20% of all
cases, depending on the make and model of the switch.
I suggest you set the server and switch both to auto, and verify that
both negotiate full duplex in that case. If they do not, this may point
to bad cabling, broken switch or nic, or odd misconfiguration on the
switch.
What make and model of switch is that?

Massimo,

The switch is a 3COM Office Connect Dual Speed Switch 16 plus (Model Number
3C16792).

Set the server to auto negotiate as you suggested although I've tried this
before without any success.

Any other ideas?

Neil

This is an unmanaged switch right? You absolutely cannot set the nic
manually to FD when conneting to a unconfigurable swicth. The switch
will most likely fall back to HD in that case.

Try setting the nic hard to half-duplex. Also check the lan statistics
in monitor. If the swicth has LEDs indicating duplex, verify it matches
the setting on the server nic. This is almost definitely a comms
problem.

Massimo,

Tried both your suggestions but still no joy.

Even swapped out the NIC and cabling for a new Intel Pro 100 that I had
lying around but no improvement.

This server is about to be removed from service and replaced with a new one
running NSBS6.0 so I guess I'll just live with it until then and see if
things improve following the NOS upgrade.

Many thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

Neil -

I had a similar problem until I updated NIC drivers on the workstation. Are
you sure you have the latest drivers?

Judy,

Thanks for the reply.

The workstation contains an Intel Pro/100+ Management Adapter and have
downloaded and installed the latest driver set 6.01.03.0000.

Still no improvement in file copy speed.
