Does the supplied SBS virus scanner (or the Grant number updated one)
have the ability to download updates via FTP ?

The equivalent product that you could buy in the UK (Dr Solomons) can be
programmed to autoupdate with the Netshield console. The netshld NLM
downloads the ZIP files itself and extracts the DAT files from there.

I downloaded a pile of the Netware updates when I had a valid grant
number, but can no longer remember which update belongs to which product,
Mcafeee (supplied with SBS) or Dr Solomons (what you could buy in the UK)

Use the Virusscan Mirror option to download the files from the FTP site and
store them on your server. Then update the server and the workstations from
the folder on the server using the scheduler in the McAfee consoles.

Mirror is an option in the workstation installation (custom, not default) of
Virusscan that sets up a download from the NAI FTP site to a location on
your hard drive. You then set up the workstations and the server to update
their virus definitions from the server site instead of having each one do
their own download/update. You can read about it in the tech notes on the
NAI web site.

Or you can use the Epolicy Orchestrator (!) that ships with AVD (not TVD) to
do this - The mirror option only allows the file to be saved to a local
drive on the workstation (yes, it knows that P: drive is on the server!)
leaving you with the annoying task of copying the files to a network
location. You can schedule this of course, but its a major problem with
Virusscan 4.5.1 (4.03 you could save to a network location no problem, damn
NAI)

But at least 4.5.1 updates the engine as well as the dats!!

Was this a problem with the older 4.5.0.xxx

Actually I think the 4.5.0.xx version *could* save to a network location,
but I had non stop performace issues with it and I would avoid it!! Also I
don't believe it automaticaly updated the scanning engine, but I may be
wrong here...

Peter.

Really, what problems ?

It does not cause any problems that I am aware of at any of the sites I
look after.

Generaly the workstation would slowdown to a crawl at regular intervals, and
I also had major problems with the install/uninstall/upgrade process which
never seemed to get rid of any prior versions properly..

Also as I remember if "all files" was selected then groupWise notify would
hang on startup more often than not.

But touch wood 4.5.1sp1 seems to work quite well!

I dont have all files selected.

Never see the other problem you mention though.

No, you can save to a mapped network drive. See the setup instructions,
nai9898, in the Knowledgebase. There is plenty of information there on how
to set up the Mirror utility in 4.5.1.

Well I certainly could not get it to save to a network location, but I'll
checkout the NAI KB. (never got much joy from their kb before so I
neglected to search on this..)
Good to know it's possiblle, i had presumed they wanted everyone to use the
E policy number...

Many thanks,

peter.

ps why "judy's news"?, just curious!!

Hi Judy I just looked up the KB article and all it says is that it *is*
possible if you put in a mapped network drive, but I have never got this to
work, at least with WinXP/Novell client.

Are you saying that you have got this to work? If so how?

Thanks,

Peter.
