As I understand it, the maximum number of partitions per hard disk on an
NSBS5.0 server is 4.

Just wondering why the limit?

Does NSBS6.0 have the same limit?

Many thanks in advance.

Not quite. The maximum number of partitions per hard disk on *every* IBM
compatible PC is 4, regardless of the OS.

Because IBM decided so back in 1983.

Obviously.

Neil, are you perhaps confusing 'partitions' with 'volumes' here?

Barry (& Massimo),

Thanks for the replies.

Yes and no, if that makes sense.

The reason that I asked the question is that I wanted to created two
additional partitions on the server hard disk (already have 4 partitions (1
dell manufacturers, 1 dos, 1 sys and 1 data) on the disk) and then put a
separate volume on each of these new partitions. Just thought that for the
sake of housekeeping it would keep things nice and tidy.

Suppose I'll just have to extend the existing data partition (using
ServerMagic) and slot the new volumes in there.

OK -- I understand -- I worry more about volumes that span partitions than
having a pure 1 to 1 ratio for partitions and volumes.

By the way, you might look at Portlock Software's Storage Manager as an
alternative to ServerMagic.

Barry,

Already had Portlock in mind - Portlock looks much more comprehensive in
comparison to SM.

We're about to move to NSBS6.0 and I was aware that ServerMagic is no longer
being updated to support this environment.

Neil

Exactly -- the Portlock folks have been very responsive to folks here as well.

This is not really surprising as SM is no longer being developed, but
the Portlock chaps are going strong.

I have had to events with the beta software where we had problems, and
the fixes were available the next day, (they even pulled an all night
session to fix one of them) somehow I just don't see that happening at
PowerQuest!

In this case, it looks to me like you have three partitions. Dell, DOS and
Netware. Netware has two volumes.

Normally on those dizzy manufacturer's partitions you have no room to add
anything anyway, even if they weren't read only.
