If we configure a win98 workstation to obtain an IP address automatically,
we can ping the server and soho firewall. If we specify an IP address we
cannot ping the server or firewall. Is the issue the subnet mask? The
server uses the default address whereas the specified address has a subnet
mask of 255.255.255.240.

Thanks in advance for your help.

All netmasks on the same network need to be the same. What netmask is the
soho firewall using? I assume the soho is providing the dynamic addresses?
Unless you have a need to make smaller networks I suggest using the
default mask of 255.255.255.0

With the netmask you've set on the server it will only recognise addresses
in the range 192.168.111.1 to 192.168.111.14 (192.168.111.0 and
192.168.111.15 are in the same subnet but shouldn't be used for devices).

Taking the information from the TCP/IP Console on the server, the address
mask for the server is 255.255.255.0. which matches the subnet mask on the
trusted side of the soho firewall. The subnet mask of the external network
is 255.255.255.240. When I configure the workstation, which is behind the
soho firewall, with a static IP and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.240., I
cannot ping the soho firewall.

I must be missing something and appreciate your patience.

you need to use the same subnet mask that the server is using, IE
255.255.255.0
