cannot login with tree name on Intel 1000MT card, IP-adress works fine

Hi,

We have a NW6 server with SP3. As a test fore some heavy users, we added a
dual port Intel Pro/1000 MT server adapter. I connect this adapter with a
new 3COM Switch 3824 and my workstation on the same 3824 switch. There is no
bridge between the new and the current swith yet.

The problem is that my workstation cannot see the tree name, but it's
possible to login with the ip-adress of the 1000mt card filled in the tree
field.
This problem is not occured on the original segment (100 Mbit).

Ww work only on IP. During binding the mt1000 adapter I see a message SLPTCP
bound to <ip-adres>.
There is no SLPDA loaded or configured on the LAN.

I have used the latest drivers of Intel (ce1000.lan).

#note:
3 days ago after installing the new NIC, i had the sampe problem but on the
other card too. No user could login from that moment. After rebooting the
server the problem was solved.
I want to use this option to reboot the server after 17:00,
but I hope that someone could give me a solution without rebooting the
server.

1) I would suggest loading SLPDA on your network and placing this entry on your
PCs. (In a flat network, this may not help.)
2) Try disabling Spanning Tree on your switches, this may help.

news://support-forums.novell.com/novell.support.os.client.winnt-2k-xp may also
be a better place to start - it is more likely a workstation than server issue.

I agree SLPDA is the way to go.  Most likely your switch either isn't forwarding Multicast packets, or the procedure for just plugging in the server in the new switch bypasses the Multicast packet that tells a switch that it is part of a multicast group (either as a provider or a subscriber---I don't remember the exact procedures or names, just that multicast uses some kind of join packet to let a switch know that it will recieve packets for a specific multicast group---I'm assuming that this is why it is working when you reboot the server).
