Onboard GB NIC support ?

Hi,

I'm looking at purchasing a regular desktop system for testing purposes. I
see that many motherboards come with integrated 10/100/1000 NIC.
Anyone knows if Novell drivers are available for these NICs ?
Which chipset to look for ?

It would depend on the NIC.

The two major ones that I am aware of are Intel and Broadcom.

Both are supported though the Broadcom NIC has many driver issues.
If you are looking at a P4 865/875 system, I would also suggest the Intel NIC
for a non-netware reason.
The Intel NIC is specially integrated into the motherboard so that it does not
use resources on the PCI Bus which could be important for a server system.

Now I'm sure I have the details on the Intel NIC integration a little askew
but someplace like http://www.tomshardware.com discusses the NIC matter
correctly and which I'm only recalling.

So you are saying that as long as I take Intel or Broadcom chipset the
CE1000 or B57 drivers will work ?

I know. Normally we have HP Proliant servers with integrated Broadcom.
We always order extra Intels to go with...

Yeah, but save yourself the trouble of getting bit on the butt and just get
the Intel. If B57 doesn't get you today, it will tomorrow.

A number of desktop boards use the 3Com Gigabit LOM controller (3c940).
This is equivalent to the 3C2000 adapter and there is a NetWare driver for
it (3c2000.lan), but so far I have never heard anyone report his
experiances with this controller.

Thanks Marcel,

We received some of those last month and now helpdesk report that they can't
put i,ages on them using DOS client. Good to know which LAN driver to add to
the bootflop :-)
