By default, TCP/IP on Windows XP Pro is set to "Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server. If static IP address is used or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP." If the default is used, and the DHCP server does not provide the setting, Netbios is disabled, meaning the machine can't join the domain or browse netbios resources. I would like to enable my Novell DHCP server to provide the proper DHCP option.
Apparently, this DHCP option is Microsoft extension of DHCP. From Microsoft Technet article:
HOW TO: How to Disable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP By Using DHCP Server [Q313314]
Disable NetBIOS at the DHCP Server
----------------------------------
To disable NetBIOS at the DHCP Server
1. Start the DHCP Manager tool, right-click Scope Option, click
Configure Options, and then click the Advanced
tab.
2. Under Vendor Class, click Microsoft Options. The
user class should remain unchanged (as Default User
Class).
3. Click to select the 001Microsoft Disable
NetBIOS Option check box, and then set the date entry value
to 0x2.
I know how to a custom option tag in Novell's DHCP server - but you need to know what option number, etc., to enter into the option tag. Although this is strictly a Microsoft question, I hope there is someone out there who's run into this.
Thanks,

Actually, the DHCP vendor-specific information has a quite special way
of operating, and I don't think Novell's DHCP server supports it. In
essence, what happens is that client makes a request reporting its
vendor class in option 60, and the server replies with vendor-specific
information for that specific vendor using option 43. For more details
see sections 8.4 and 9.13 at
ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2132.txt
or

ndows2000/en/server/help/sag_DHCP_add_OptionsMsVendorSpecific.htm
Note that Novell's DHCP server has an option 43, but there is no
documentation on how its used.
