Exactly what is not working. After you've set up the zone, then LOAD NAMED -ZI
ZONENAME -- if that works, you're good to go. If not, what errors occur?

I need to explain further. The primary DNS server, of which mine is a
secondary, handles 4 different domains. When I had it set to forward, I
didn't have to worry about what domain it was trying to resolve. If it
couldn't resolve locally, it would just forward everything else to that
primary DNS server For instance, I set up zone1.abc as a secondary to
the primary but it does not resolve zone2.abc, zone3.abc or zone4.abc.
With this setup, do I have to add each of those domains into my
configuration and set each one up as a secondary?

No, you should only need to setup the zones you want, but also keep the
forwarding setup. It sounds like you removed the forwarding, and that
could be the whole problem at present.
