I have a problem with one of our laptops. The Laptop is an XP with client
4.83 service pack 1 with only IP. We are using Netware 6 service pack 3.
This laptop is the only one with this problem, all my laptops are set the
same way, here it is: when we try to login the error message Tree or server
could not be found pops-up. I typed the tree name, context, IP address of
the server, increased the timeout in the Name resolution of the client,
check the NIC card, nothing works but what it's more confusing is that if I
uninstall the Novell Netware client and install the Microsoft Netware Client
I can login into the Novell network without any problems I can even run my
login scripts without any errors. Any ideas? Thank you!

I forgot to mention that although I can't login I can ping my server without
any problem.

Ana,

You may have some other IP configuration issue with the Novell Client as the
Microsoft Netware Client runs IPX-only.

IP address of the server? I'm assuming you mean Preferred Server or the
Server: field in the client profile.
Using the IP address of server in those fields just takes name resolution
out of the equation.

What about the user object? Is the preferred server configured there?

Yes, I think does for 4.9 client not for 4.83. Any other idea?

I had similar issues when I moved my network to NW6 SP3. I have two laptops
(Dell Latitude D600) with XP and Client 4.9 SP1. What finally worked for me
is going into the Advanced Login properties of the client and turning off
NMAS authentication. No more problems.

I tried what I mention one thing at a time. Yes, I'm refering to the
prefered server. What do you mean by the user object? I'm so confuse from
trying so many things.

Is that in ConsoleOne? if that's what you are asking "yes" the server is
showing there.

ConsoleOne or NWADMIN.
Does it matter if a different user account is used to login?

If you can verify that the hardware is good, check to make sure that there
hasn't been a virus infection or spyware installed on that box.

The hardware is fine. We checked for virus and spyware and everything is
okay there also. The problem happens with any one that tries to login.
I think I will uninstall IP, the NIC card and the client again, clean a few
other things and give it another try.

Dave,

You'll recall from the beginning of the thread that she has the Novell
Client installed IP-only. It works fine with the Microsoft Client for
Netware and IPX.

I'm curious if the latest NWFS.SYS for SP1a would have helped any.

I've been having a similar problem.
When I manually select the frame type for the "NWLink IPX/SPX/Netbios
Compatible Transport Protocol", it works every time.

I just ran into the same problem on two machines yesterday. These are
identical machines hardware-wise and software-wise (freshly ghosted).
I had ghosted 6 compaq presarios and two of them wouldn't connect to our
preferred server. They authenticated to the tree and we got mappings to two
other servers, but the main server wouldn't be mapped at all.

So I went in and did browsing on the machine. I browsed to the server and it
listed the printer objects and the volumes. But I couldn't browse into the
volumes at all.

On one of the two machines, I removed the client and reinstalled it and it
worked.
On the other, that didn't work. I removed NMAS - that didn't work. I added
IPX to that machine and it worked, of course.

But I have serious concerns about the 450 machines I've just updated to
IP-only. should I acu them to have IPX to cut this one off at the pass?

Chris,

Most of the time its questionable IP configuration (SLP, switches, DHCP,
etc.) or less likely bad hardware...

Start by verifying if you're using switches that connect to your clients.
If so check that those ports have spanning tree disabled...
