I saw a couple of 32-bit NetWare DOS client examples on Google where
a mysterious /W parameter has been used:

NIOS.EXE /W

Does anybody know the purpose of this parameter.

Thanks,

Erwin

Hoi Erwin,

We've been using this parameter for 7 years now, but I don't know exactly
why because I inherited this environment 5 years ago. We use W95C DOS and
I've been told that the /W parameter tells the client to use "real DOS
mode", whatever that may be.
My guess is that early W95 DOS versions have extra functionality compared to
DOS 6.22 that interfered with the client. Fact is we've been using W95 and
W98 DOS without any problems, allthough this is not recommended. Comes in
handy when dealing with FAT32 partitions.
BTW, I've never seen any reference to this parameter in the KB or in
developer.

Keep on the good work with the bootflop :-)

Dag Peter,

Thanks for your ("undocumented") info on /W. I still hope someone from
Novell is listening who could clarify this.

BTW did you ever try FreeDOS with IP-BOOT flops? It has FAT32 support,
small footprint and it is much faster. Especially with the new UDMA
drivers that have come available (upto 10x faster HD access).

Thanks. And thank you for the "[Public] RF on SYS:LOGIN" hint on this
forum. I added it to my FAQ.

Groeten,

Erwin

Erwin,

While your at it, ask what the /D parameter means.
How about enabling nios logging with /L ? The log file should show the
differences between loading nios with and without /W

/D debugging: writes some info to screen about XMS memory and handles
/L Logging: logs info to file NIOS.LOG

The info in NIOS.LOG is the same when running with or without /W :-(
