Well, doing that is fine since you mean x86_32 and x86_64 and the latter
is backward-compatible with the software built for the former. Besides
not taking full advantage of potential math benefits in the processor
there are one or two other considerations I would mention.

First, if you have >= 4 GB RAM, go with 64-bit. You can use things like
PAE in order to support > 3.x GB RAM on the system and have it all
available to the kernel, but your processes are still limited in that case
and you also have a performance hit using PAE. On the other hand running
64-bit may take a little more RAM for doing the same things as 32-bit
simply because of larger addresses or other things. In testing eDirectory
was found to take about 20% more RAM (which isn't much considering how
little it usually uses) by going from 32-bit to 64-bit and I suspect other
applications may play similarly.

On the flip side when you do decide to go full 64-bit you CANNOT do so
without reinstalling (so do it now). Also your 32-bit apps should be just
fine, even within a 64-bit OS. This is one of the reasons that Opterons,
Athlons, and other x68_64 things are beating out Itaniums and have been
for a decade.... it's hard to make people completely drop one architecture
for another when backward-compatible upgrades are an option.

Good luck.
