One issue might also be that I was sort of confronted with differences
between this guide
http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/17174.html
and this one
http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html
anyway, I wound up downloading both these packages:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7182-pkg1.run
I don't remember which I installed first, but whichever one it was,
hung at some point -- I think it was at the point where I needed to run
Sax2 from the terminal -- and then I tried to install the other.
Now, SUSE cannot start KDE, instead, on bootup it leaves me at a
terminal prompt.
Ok, here's where I am right now -- this morning I tried to re-create
the error by installing the legacy package (7182) -- though I'm still
not sure if it's the right one. When I run the shell script, I get:
No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp
site; this means that the install will need to compile a kernel
interface for your kernel.
then
Building kernel module etc.
which eventually completes, and tells me to run Sax2, which I try:
No X-Server is running
Sax will shut down...
couple of error messages after that I think; then it halts with
sorry could not start configuration screen
for details refer to the log file /var/log/SaxLog
which has lots of stuff, but what is germane I think is at the bottom:
ERROR: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-7182
but this Xmodule has the version 1.0-8762. Please make sure that the
kernel module and all NVidia driver components have the same version.
The problem is, when I've tried to install using the 1.0-8762 version,
the system says it's missing a package, and offers to connect to the
NVidia site. When I confirm, it just sits there doing nothing.
I'm fairly confident that I've got all the necessary ingredients
according to the page on the Novell site (those steps all completed
successfully on my first installation attempt). In any case, at this
point (I guess) I'd like to
1) recompile to a vanilla kernel and then
2) get the correct package(s) and install those to have a nicer-looking
KDE desktop
-rafe t.
My canned instructions for installing NVidia driver in SUSE:
Go to console by pressing ctrl+alt+F1
Log in as root, then command init 3
Open YaST with command yast
Install the kernel source and gcc
Run Online Update and quit YaST
Then command:
tiny-nvidia-installer --update
Accept everything. This will install the NVidia driver and
configure xorg.conf
Command sax2
Configure your display
When everything is finished, command:
init 5 && exit
Log in normally and you're in business.

1st question what kind of monitor are you using ?
when you get to the command prompt and you are at the above terminal prompt
login as root and run sax2 set the resolution and test then reboot i had
this same problem when i first installed the nvidia driver it sets the
resolution wrong i have a philips 170w4 the max resolution on this monitor
is 1280 x 768 the nvidia driver would set the monitor at 1280 x 1024.
Thats why i asked the question what kind of monitor you are using.
