We purchased 5 user NW SBS 6.5 (6) in Feb 2006 with 1 yr maintenance.

We then purchased 15 additional users and 20 x 3 years Upgrade Protection
which will expire Feb 2010.

obviously, NW SBS 6.6 is now a dead product, but I don't recall what Novell
did with all the SBS customers through the stumbling switch to NOWS SBE.

I know that in May 2007 I received a whole bunch of NOWS entitlements.

Were SBS licences switched to full NOWS, or NOWS SBE?

Do I have an option to purchase maintenance for NOWS, or is my only option
to purchase maintenance for NOWS SBE?

if so, does this still cover me to run the NW version? (As I don't wish to
switch to NOWS SBE)

I have also been told that there is no upgrade available from NOWS SBE to
NOWS - can this really be true? It seems totally insane.

I really only want GroupWise, but I am guessing I can't just buy GW
maintenance, I would have to buy "new" GW licenses as well?

and obviously I won't qualify for the free GW licenses under the migration
offer as I already use GW from SBS - what a mess

thx
Simon

OK. Can you log in to the customer portal and check there? You should have
GW8 available for downlolad there. My understanding is that you can
download just that and run it on your existing NetWare server.

Your questions are sales/licensing related and not technical though and I
will try to get them clarified.

Novell has a new enhancement request system,
or what is now known as the requirement portal.
If customers would like to give input in the upcoming
releases of Novell products then they should go to

The problem is, even Novell doesn't, or more likely, doesn't want to.

Real NOWS? Can you check?

Actually, you could chose yourself. E.G, you can simply purchase
maintenance for either one when your SBS Maintenance expires. Now as I
said, there's a good chance that Novell no longer remembers that, and
tries to force you to NOWS-SBE.

Well, you can of course contoniue to run your SBS as long as you wish,
it's your software, and as there won't be any updates ever again for
it's included products anyways...
But no, you're not allowed to e.g install the Netware (or Windows for
that matter) Groupwise Version as part of a NOWS-SBE license.

Yes, unfortunately that's true. NOWS-SBE is a completely different and
in many parts modified product. That's a distinct difference to the
famous and succesful Netware SBS, which was a bundle of almost
completely unaltered original full products.

Update licenses, yes.

Right. There *was* another promo for existing GW customers with older
versions, but that has expired now.

Many thanks for your response

In Customer Portal I have real NOWS, AND NOWS SBE available

Do you refer to the Sept 11 07 announcement from Novell, ie before NOWS SBE
was thought up, which states that SBS customers are given NOWS licenses?

No upgrade path from NOWS SBE to NOWS seems crazy, but I guess they will
claim it is the same as MS SBS <sigh>

>NOWS-SBE is a completely different and in many parts modified product.

Do you have any comments or knowledge on Kevin Boyle's recent posts in
OWS.SBE forum regarding ability to deploy SBE using full products?

Looks like my best hope is to fight for NOWS Maintenance without having to
purchase licenses

Many thanks

Hehehe. Yet another variant. ;)

Yup. There was another announcement later, *after* SBE shipped, which
restated that customers could chose.

Well, quite seriously, there is no upgrade path to NOWS from anywhere.
An "Upgrade Version" of NOWS simply doesn't exist, no matter where you
come from. And in reality, that was always true. Previously, there was
*only* an upgrade version, but no ful version. Now Novell removed the
"upgrade" from the name, but other than that, nothing changed.

No, that's a legal question nobody except Novell can answer. Of course,
I doubt Novell can, or will in any whatsoever consistent way. I would
expect if you ask 4 different people at Novell, you will get 5 different
answers. ;)

Well, if you already have NOWS in your customer center, there shouldn't
be any fight necessary.

Many thanks for the reply

So, it would appear that I may choose to purchase maintenance for either
NOWS or NOWS SBE (at about 1/4 of the cost)

NOWS SBE currently includes an entitlement to use GMS, do we know if this
entitlement will switch to the new Gradenko solution when it ships? All I
can find to date states that GroupWise and/or Teaming customers on
maintenance will be entitled to it.

Many thanks
Simon
