A reverse lookup zone.
You misunderstand the question.

Are you sure forwarding from your Novell DNS works *at all*? There are
several unsolved issues with forwarding failing completely with Novell
DNS. In SP7 for instance, forwarding often stopped working after named
was unloaded once, and then loaded again. It would only start working
again after a full server reboot.
In SP8 though, for yet unknown reasons, on a big percentage of servers
(but not all), forwarding doesn't work *at all*. The DNS server will
totally ignore any configured forwarder, and always attempt to use the
root servers.
I'm not aware of any forwarding issue limited to reverse PTR lookups
though. So please confirm forwarding is working at all in your case, and
the issue is really limited to PTR lookups.
I don't think so. There is nothing in Novell DNS to allow reverse
lookups. The only thing you need is a reverse lookup zone.
Maybe the question the OP really wanted to ask was "What is needed in
Novell DNS to forward reverse lookups?" but I am really bad at mind
reading.

But nevertheless you do.

Huh? Would you elaborate on what you mean here? If you mean what you
wrote, you can't possibly be more wrong.

He's talking about *forwarding*. Quite the opposite, for forwarding you
do *NOT* need to have any zone at all.

I'm inclined to remove the "mind" in that last sentence. ;) He's
*clearly* talking about forwarding, multiple times, and describes his
setup and problem pretty detailed.
Could you elaborate on what you mean? If I create a reverse lookup zone
the server will do reverse lookups. You don't have to allow that. If I
configure forwarding then the server will forward. There is also no
option to allow that.

He's talking about reverse lookups and it seems like he thinks that
there is an option to "allow" that. But there isn't. Either you create
or reverse lookup zone or you configure forwarding. You don't have to
allow it.

I'm accessing the forum via NNTP so the history is long lost.

So then why does he "try to reword this" if everything is so pretty
clear and detailed, hm? For starters, "When using Novell DNS as a
forwarder to a DNS server" is completely unclear. The term "forwarder"
is used in both meanings: the one that forwards and the one that is
forwarded to.

Language issue. You and me used different meanings of "allow". Your
sentence above sounded as if Novell DNS can not do (=allow) reverse DNS
lookups.

...through forwarding, e.g the Novell DNS is supposed and go ask the
configured forwarding server, and it doesn't do that.

I don't see where you read that from. He's just saying it doesn't work.

Right. Nevertheless, there are several known problems with forwarding in
general (not related to reverse or regular lookups) both in SP7 and SP8.
SOmetimes it works, sometimes not.

That's a problem (configuration issue) of your own newsreader. Our
server doesn't ever remove posts.

Normal reaction when someone apparently misunderstands you, right?
Doesn't say anything where the misunderstanding comes from.

See my previous reply with details. Forwarding *is* a problem in NW DNS.
