Why capitals for NSS volumes

Hi all: Just out of curiosity, why did Novell choose to create NSS volume names in caps rather than the linux standard of lower case? And why not mount it under /mnt rather than /media? When I think media I envision floppy and CD/DVD drives, not HDs.
